Beginning March 23 and continuing through April 3, 2015, The Common Room book club will be collecting book donations and art supplies for the children at Comer Children’s Hospital.

The Common Room, a book club at Saint Xavier University, would like to share their love of books with these children and to encourage them and others to read, despite the places life may lead them.

Monica Arambula, The Common Room’s Secretary, and Yesenia Villanueva, a club member, express their ideas towards their book drive and encourage all students at SXU to participate.

If a student wants to become a part of this book drive, Arambula explains how they can do so.

“Students can volunteer their time to sit at the table with other members of the club and collect donations. If they do not have time to do so, they can simply spread the word about our book drive, along with donating anything that they can,” said Arambula.

The inspiration for this book drive came up when the club wanted to perform acts of community service for those in need. President Katie Arvia had the connections and the answer for the club’s desire to help the community.

Arambula expands upon this idea and explains how the club chose the Comer’s Children’s Hospital as their choice organization to donate the books and supplies.

“We wanted to do community service, but we weren’t sure what we wanted to do. President Katie Arvia’s aunt works at Comer Children’s Hospital so we thought, what better way than to help out a local organization?” said Arambula.

Children in this hospital will be given the gift of reading and art, but it is up to the SXU student body to make sure that this happens.  Imagine the excitement and the joy that will be seen on a child’s face upon receiving these wonderful gifts. Villanueva goes on to explain the expectations of this event and the goals that they have for the children in the hospital.

“The main goal of our event is to collect books and art supplies so that we can donate to the children at Comer’s Children Hospital. We want children to be able to express their creativity and enjoy reading books while they are at the hospital. This way they will have something fun to do,” said Villanueva.

During the time of the event, there will be a table in the diner for the collection of the books and the art supplies.  Not only will the group be collecting these items, but monetary and clothing donations as well.

“You can donate books, cash, clothing, or art supplies in either the diner or the learning center,” said Arambula. If any student has these items and would not mind bringing them in for donation, it would be much appreciated by the members of the Common Room, but even more so by the children receiving them.

For a sick child in need, this is a great opportunity for them to receive fun gifts and for any SXU student to help them out. Villanueva expresses some final thoughts about the reactions she hopes to see on the faces of the children and the successful donations the Common Room has received in past years.

They hope that this year is just as successful, or even more so, in comparison to past year, which comes down to the participation and generosity of the SXU student body. “We are most looking forward to seeing the bright children’s smiles when we give them the books and art supplies.  People were very generous the year before and we were able to collect many books,” said Villanueva.
