Recently there have been pictures circulating on the internet of J.B Pritzker’s daughter not following stay at home recommendations or CDC guidelines while in Florida. These pictures have since then been discredited and it was said that it was not his daughter in those pictures.
Many were upset when they believed it was Pritzker’s daughter because they didn’t like being told to stay home while Pritzker’s daughter was out and about. It is no surprise that Pritzker is not everyone’s favorite, but was it really necessary for people to make hateful and threatening comments and messages about his daughter? I believe the answer is absolutely not. I don’t think children should ever be brought into the conversation when discussing an adult’s actions, and as it turns out, it wasn’t even Pritzker’s daughter in the pictures.
On November 17th, Pritzker mentioned this issue and said that he was used to receiving these types of comments and treatment, but that his kids were off limits. I must say that I admire Pritzker for being able to stand up against the bullies who involved his daughter in something that has nothing to do with her. Pritzker’s wife and daughter are stuck in Florida and unfortunately will not be able to spend Thanksgiving with the rest of their family. Many thought it would be hypocritical of Pritzker to tell everyone to stay home for the holidays while having his family travel across state lines during a pandemic.
This also makes me think about how people believe everything they see online right away. A lot of people will see a story and just run with it instead of fact checking it before making a judgement about someone. I also tried putting myself in the shoes of Pritzker’s daughter and how awful she must have felt. A child is not responsible for their parent’s actions and therefore should never be involved. It is really sad that children often get dragged into situations involving their parents.
I am happy Pritzker was able to stand up and defend his daughter from the very harsh and hateful comments being made. This is also a lesson learned that people shouldn’t believe everything they see online. It is important for everyone to ensure that what they see or read online or in the media is accurate before making a comment or decision about someone. Many would also assume that this shouldn’t be a big deal since Pritzker, like many other politicians and government officials, should be used to harsh comments made about them. The difference here is that a child was involved in something that she shouldn’t have been.
While I am all for holding people accountable, this was obviously blown out of proportion and the information wasn’t even accurate. I hope this serves as a lesson to everyone so that they may be more careful and aware about the things they say and to whom they say it to.
