“Finding Nemo” is celebrating its twenty year anniversary this year. I will say that again, twenty years of “Finding Nemo”. Since the film came out, it has become many Disney fan’s favorites. When the film was first released, children came to the movie theater to watch the story of Marlin and Dory trying to find Marlin’s son.
The film was an instant success, gaining 940.4 million dollars in the box office which became the second-highest grossing film of 2003. The Pixar film would go on to receive an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature also nominated for Best Original Screenplay.
On February 8, Professor Allen Babiarz-Lira, of the Communication Department said via email, “I cannot believe that Disney Pixar’s Finding Nemo is 20 years old! I love this tale about growing up, love, and friendship. Marlin is such a great dad who has so much love for his son, and just wants to keep him safe. Dory was the comedy we needed at that time.”
Children took a lot away from these movies, such as the characters, but most importantly what the characters taught us. Characters in “Finding Nemo” expressed to the audience the idea of love and friendship from Dory helping Marlin, to Marlin protecting his only son.
As the movie was targeted towards children, it also created a sense of feeling that every parent could feel while watching Marlin struggle with his child. This particular film came across to the parent audience that it is important to keep your children safe, but at the same time, to allow your children to grow up. “Finding Nemo” taught parents and children a lot of lessons throughout the film.
Professor Babiarz-Lira continued by expressing that, “Finding Nemo” also opened the door to talk about disability culture in the limelight. ” The film was embodied by many characters that showed their struggles with overcoming their disability such as Dory, Nemo and much more.
Throughout the film, Dory has trouble with her short-term memory, which helps her to not remember an event that just happened. Nemo as well struggled with overcoming his physical disability in the film as he looks different from his friends. From the beginning of the film,Marlin explained to Nemo’s teacher that he has a bad fin which makes it hard for him to swim fast like the others.
Even though both of these characters had these disabilities, they were beginning to overcome them towards the end of the film. Therefore giving another happy ending to a Disney movie.
Also involving disabilities, the film opened up this topic to not only “Finding Nemo” but has also continued into the movies that have recently come out, such as the characters Bruno in “Encanto”, as well as Elsa in “Frozen”.
“Finding Nemo” was a Disney film that changed Disney forever, not only because of the awards that the film received but also the money that was made in the box office. “Finding Nemo” helped children and parents alike to learn many aspects of life involving love, friendship and growth. As the biggest moral of the film, it opened up the door to disabilities which are still showing in Disney films today.
“Finding Nemo” is now able to be streamed via Disney+
