Black History Month runs from February 1st through the 28th. It is so important that during these 28 days we take the time to learn about and recognize Black excellence. While I don’t believe 28 days is enough, nor does it repair all the damage that has been done to the Black community, it is an excellent time to reflect.
There are many great Black contributors and inventors that do not get nearly as much recognition as they should. I want to take this opportunity to briefly mention some that I believe all of you should know about.
Of course one of the most well known Black icons in US history is civil rights activist, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He contributed greatly to the civil rights movement and was an advocate for peaceful protesting and nonviolent resistance. Dr. King fought to achieve equality for African-Americans in the United States.
He is the only non-president to have a national holiday dedicated in his honor. Dr. King was assassinated in 1968 but his legacy continues to carry on.
Dr. Shirley Jackson was the first African-American woman to earn her doctorate in nuclear physics at MIT. Dr. Jackson also has an impressive list of inventions under her name.
In 2016, Barack Obama awarded her the National Medal of Science. There is no doubt that Dr. Jackson is a great example to girls and women everywhere of what can be accomplished with hard work.
Another Black inventor that deserves recognition is Elijah McCoy. In 1872, he developed a lubricating cup that would be ordered by railroad companies all over the country. McCoy’s invention became so popular that other companies tried to sell their own versions.
The railroad companies wanted the authentic device and thus called it the “real McCoy.” Elijah McCoy is credited with over 50 inventions throughout his career.
These are just a few of the Black contributors and inventors that deserve some recognition while we celebrate Black History Month, but there are many more that everyone should learn about. I believe it is so important for children to learn about Black History Month. Black excellence has been ignored for far too long and it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure future generations learn about Black history and their significant contributions.
Saint Xavier University launched an event on the Den that celebrates Black History Month. On the flyer, it says that every Thursday, the diner will be offering a special food option in celebration of Black History Month. On February 25th, there will be an online discussion with Dr. Tracy Crump on how racism impacts the youth. Registration is required for this event if you are interested.
These are just a few of the things SXU is doing to celebrate Black History Month and Black excellence. I think it is incredible and necessary for all college campuses to celebrate the month.
Ignoring Black History Month is the equivalent to ignoring the challenges and obstacles Black students have to go through. SXU claims to be a place where all are welcomed and where diversity is celebrated, so it makes me extremely happy to see them taking the initiative to celebrate Black History Month. Let us all take this time to reflect on Black excellence and all the Black community has endured throughout the course of history
