Career, Leadership, Academics, Viable Employment and Service or C.L.A.V.E.S. Workshops, which are designed to help second-year students adapt to various aspects of college life. The event will take place February 24th & 25th, March 3rd & 4th, March 10th & 11th, March 17th & 18th from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm. While designed for second-year students, the workshops are open to all SXU students.
Imelda Macias, Director of Graduate Admission, and Patricia Santoyo-Marin, Director of the Center for Inclusive Excellence, are hosting the workshops.
According to Macias, “the workshops cover a series of topics that fall under two categories: topics that provide practical knowledge, and topics that provide an opportunity for reflection and personal growth.”
Macias continued, “The workshops provide an opportunity for personal growth that covers spirituality and social concern, mental health, authentic self, hybrid identities, and leadership.”
The C.L.A.V.E.S. Zoom information is found on TheDen and available for access to all students. Please note that attendance will be recorded at the end of each session.
Additionally, students who attend seven or more workshops participate in a pinning ceremony and receive a Certificate of Completion. They will also be honored with a stole on graduation that reflects them completing these workshops.
“Students are encouraged to upload their certificate to their E-Portfolios and utilize it as evidence on future resumes of participation in co-curricular activities and leadership development at SXU.”
The workshops aim to provide various topics, and the workshops’ ambiance allows students an open forum to discuss serious and critical subject matters. There is a great emphasis on diversity and listening to people’s stories. The workshops “are not formatted to be one-way conversations, rather rich dialogues.”
Macias mentioned that one of her favorite parts about hosting the C.L.A.V.E.S. workshops are getting to know the students: “Every session, students open up and generously share their experiences, thoughts, and feelings on different topics, allowing us to see just how outgoing, brave, resilient, creative, smart, compassionate, and driven our students are.”
The workshops are about “starting and continuing a conversation that will provide students with important skills that can be applied to their college life and eventually into their personal or professional lives. These workshops aim to start and continue conversations that connect students and diversify certain ways of thinking.”
