Many ears across the globe were uplifted by the release of Black Radio III (Supreme Edition) by Robert Glasper. On October 14, 2022, his original project Black Radio III was extended with many perplexed artists such as Bilal, BJ the Chicago Kid, and Mac Miller.
A lot of artists, as well as fans, still show heavy support in remembrance of the loving lyrics, “Mac Miller,” who passed away in 2018. His legacy of conscious rap lives on; a surprise album I Love Life, Thank You, was dropped in July in honor of his craft.
On October 10th, Glasper gave his audience a taste of gold when he put out the song “Therapy pt. 2,” featuring Mac Miller.
As I took a listen to the track, the bliss in his bars complimented the production of Glasper’s colorful melody. There was so much life in the tonality of his delivery, as the legend lived a lucid truth through every lyric.
The timeframe of his bars are very clear to the audience.
There was a specific line that resonated with me, “I just got the iPhone 6, it looks like Steve Jobs done ran out of tricks,” (Therapy pt.2, Mac Miller, 2022). That lyric alone holds much value, taking listeners back to a time where we all breathed the same air as him; as we are living the same story in his songs today.
Additionally, on October 10, Zane Lowe did an Interview with Glasper on Apple Music 1. In this interview, Glasper reminisced on the memories of working with Mac Miller, complimenting his work ethic and revolving interest in music.
“… He always wanted to work. Few times he came and sat with me, some of my shows, always talking about music. He just really lived off music, Music was literally his air. Gonna miss that dude,” (Zane Lowe Interview, Robert Glasper, 2022).
When musicianship and extraordinary composition are brought up in discussion, one musician that is never left out of the conversation is Robert Glasper. Not only is he a master of jazz expression, but he is also the backbone of a lot of production in R&B and Hip-Hop in today’s music.
Black Radio III highlights the importance of Hip-Hop, featuring some of the legends of rap music such as Common, Q-Tip, and Killer Mike, while also incorporating some of R&B’s icons Jennifer Hudson, Yebba, and PJ Morton.
Glasper has always expressed his love for Hip-Hop, stating in a video with Jazz Night in America, saying “Jazz is the mother or father of hip hop.” Glasper has said this line in his previous projects, Black Radio and Black Radio 2.
The original album Black Radio III came out last February, bringing warm and soulful vibes at such a nippy time of the year. As the temperatures drop, so do the chords that’ll keep us cozy and cognizant, reminding us that his music is just as cold as the weather!
