With the help of junior center Brittany Collins’ 21 points, eight rebounds, and six blocks, Saint Xavier managed an 81-71 non-conference victory over Taylor University (Ind) on Monday, November 26. The 10-point contest was the smallest margin of victory for the Cougars this season.
Collins shot an efficient 59 percent from the field in 33 minutes of play and was a force on the defensive boards, as she reeled in seven of her eight rebounds on that side of the floor. Freshman guard Chanel Fanter played a big role in Saint Xavier’s victory with an impressive performance.
Fanter finished with 17 points, nine rebounds, and six assists on 6-of-14 shooting in 32 minutes. Collins and Fanter were among five Cougars who scored in double digits on the evening.
Stand out freshman Maddie Welter struggled from the field, but played an aggressive style in an attempt to get to the free throw line. Her five made attempts contributed to her 12 total points in 35 minutes.
Junior guard Casey McMahon made the most of her 23 minutes of playing time by shooting an efficient 4-of-5 from three. McMahon finished the night with 12 points as well.
Overall, Saint Xavier put together a gutsy effort on the road against a tough Trojans team. Another balanced performance by multiple Cougars helped keep the women undefeated on the young season.
