The Saint Xavier University softball team was scheduled to play four games this weekend, two against Trinity International University and two versus Roosevelt University. Yet due to inclement weather, the Cougars were only able to play the two games against Roosevelt on Sunday.
SXU run-ruled the Lakers in five innings in both games–scores of 12-1 and 17-3.
The Cougars’ offense was led by Alexus Reese and Brittatny Schultz; Reese had three home runs on the day and Schultz recorded seven RBIs in the two games.
Pitchers Alyssa Frey, Laila Summers, and Julianne Claas covered the ten innings of play on the mound.
The No. 24 ranked Cougars got off to a hot start in game one of the afternoon, a first-inning home run off the bat of right-fielder Katie Janiga.
The Cougars scored five more runs between the second and third innings before RU could push a run across the plate. Three of those five runs came in the second inning, when Kyla Kissee homered to center.
Reese homered in both the third and fourth innings. Schultz drove in two RBIs in the fifth to secure the run-rule win.
Game two started off very similarly when Saint Xavier scored three runs in the first inning. Two runs were scored when the Cougars capitalized on errors from the Roosevelt defense.
The Cougars’ offense really opened up the floodgates in the second inning, scoring seven runs.
Schultz and Reese combined for four of the seven runs; Schultz driving two of them in with a double, and Reese hitting her third home run of the day to drive in two more.
Roosevelt rallied in the third and fourth innings, scoring three runs off of a double and a home run, but it wasn’t nearly enough to cause damage.
SXU scored four insurance runs in the fifth inning before Summers came in to pitch in the bottom half of the inning, sending the Cougars home with the victory.
The Cougars are scheduled for two double headers this week, against the University of Saint Francis on the 15 and at Olivet Nazarene University on the 16.
