SXU Baseball Season Halted by Coronavirus

The SXU baseball team was in the middle of their 10 day trip to Florida when news came out that the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic put a halt to their season.

Before that news came out, the Cougars were in the middle of a 14 game trip across Florida that the Cougars were doing well in.

Saint Xavier entered the trip with a 2-5 record. They kicked off the trip with a four-game series against Keiser University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on March 3rd and 4th.

The series was not very competitive, despite both teams winning two games. Both wins for both teams were blowouts, neither team was competitive in either loss.

The Cougars then traveled up to Babson Park, Florida to play Webber International University, who were ranked as the 16th best team in the country.

The Cougars, who entered the two-game series with a 4-7 record, pulled off an upset in game one, defeating Webber International by a score of 8-4. Things reverted back to normal in game two though, as Webber International defeated SXU by a score of 5-3.

Saint Xavier then traveled to Lakeland, Florida to play against Southeastern University, who were ranked as the 4th best team in the country.

The Cougars were completely outmatched in the two-game series, losing 14-7 in game one and 5-1 in game two. The Cougars stayed in Lakeland to play Lincoln College. Saint Xavier’s pitching completely shut down Lincoln en route to a 2-0 win.

The Cougars then played Lincoln Christian University in a two-game series. Saint Xavier completely shut down Lincoln Christian, defeating them 10-0 in game one and 24-1 in game two.

The Cougars were scheduled to play IU-South Bend to wrap up the Florida Trip on March 12th and 13th, but that was when the Cougars received some devastating news.

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the governing body for all sports leagues that the Cougars participate in, announced that all winter sports would be canceled and spring sports would be postponed.

This means that for now, the Cougars baseball season has been placed on hold. Before the season was postponed, the Cougars had an 8-10 record.

The future of the season is a bit of a mystery right now, with a whole lot of different scenarios being presented. Some think that the season could be pushed back for a few months and resumed in May or June, but others are not so optimistic.

Those not-so optimistic people include the NCAA, the highest athletic governing body in all of college sports.

They have already canceled all spring sporting events, including college baseball. The next biggest problem is what happens with senior athletes. Do they get another year of eligibility or do they just graduate without playing their final season? The answer to both of these questions is unclear, we are in a very fluid situation right now and we probably won’t have answers for a while. But for now, these athletes are joining the rest of the country in the fight against the Coronavirus.
