Irresistibly charming and talented Puerto Rican artist, Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio, also famously known as “Bad Bunny.” Has had every Reggaeton fan on their feet ever since he surfaced in the music industry. Collaborating with numerous artists such as J Balvin, Daddy Yankee, Nicky Jam and many more artists. Utilizing his platform for change is what Bad Bunny is all about. He is not afraid to express himself and defy societal norms and stigmas.
2020 has been a huge year for him. He started the year off by releasing his anticipated hit album “YHLQMDLG” translated as “I Do Whatever I Want.” After his release of “YHLQMDLG,” Ocasio ensured his fans would not be bored throughout the pandemic. Therefore, released another album titled “LAS QUE NO IBAN A SALIR.” Translated as “The Ones That Weren’t Going To Come Out.” It is a compilation of unreleased songs that his fans loved. He teased fans with these unreleased songs during his three hour long Instagram livestream. While sitting down in his living room he connected with his fans and sang most of his songs with them. After the huge couple of months he was having, he decided to give himself a break and tweeted “Bye Me Fui” on May 19th, 2020. Which is a song on LAS QUE NO IBAN A SALIR, and translates to “Bye I Left.” This had his fans wondering where he was and when he was going to mysteriously resurface. Bad Bunny then broke his silence on August 29th, 2020 and released a song on SoundCloud titled, “COMPOSITOR DEL AÑO.”
He was awarded Artist of the Year at the Latin Music Awards, which inspired the title of this song. This song addresses the current issues we are facing as a country. He touched base on matters such as the Black Lives Matter movement, and COVID-19. While he was on his hiatus, he did not speak about the tragic murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. Instead of tweeting or posting on Instagram, he did what does best and released a song expressing his views instead. One specific lyric that touched everyone was “2020 y el racismo es peor que el COVID.” Which means 2020 and racism is worse than COVID-19.
Aside from shedding light on these serious issues, Bad Bunny also represents and stands with womxn and the LGBTQ community. The term womxn is another way to spell and allows a safe space for non-binary, transgender individuals. In his music video “Ignorantes”, which means “Ignorants” he represents same sex relationships throughout the video. His music and videos can pertain to absolutely anyone. One of his popular songs titled “Yo Perreo Sola ”, represents his support for women’s rights. In his music video he dressed up as a woman dancing and enjoying herself.Although, he received criticism from the public and other artists. Including having one of the artists whom Bad Bunny has collaborated with in the past, Anuel, unfollowed him on social media after the music video was released.
Bad Bunny has burned bridges with fans, friends and others from expressing his authenticity. On the bright side of it all, Bad Bunny remains humble through the many hardships he has endured as a Latinx artist. He organized a free virtual concert in New York City for all of his fans to enjoy. What makes this virtual concert so special is that he barely promoted it. He was driven all throughout the city performing for the public and those online. He had fans chasing him and singing along with him. He started his concert out with his beautiful song, “BENDICIONES.” Which means “Blessings,” which mentions his gratitude for the front line workers sacrificing themselves during the pandemic. Amidst the chaos we have endured as a country he manages to find the silver lining during his creative process as a singer/songwriter. All he cares about is releasing beautiful music and maintaining a safe space for his fans. He endlessly gives his fans what they desire. He considers his audience, which is something artists may lack nowadays. Bad Bunny is unlike any other Reggeaton artist that has surfaced. He is fearless, utterly talented, and charismatic.
