Athlete Profile: Johnaton Tolar

#15 Tolar Credits: SXU Athletics

Although it may not seem like it, baseball is well underway whether at Saint Xavier University or just around the Chicagoland area.  It is hard to believe it with this January-like weather, but trust me baseball is here and it is heating up the nation.

So far, the Cougars have been performing well during the regular season.  In fact, if the team continues to play strongly against their conference rivals then I believe this team does have a future in the post season.

One member on the team that also believes in this goal is right-handed pitcher Johnaton Tolar.

Tolar is a senior member of the baseball team at Saint Xavier University.  He is currently studying as a Criminal Justice major and minoring in Political Science.  Johnaton is a local Chicago native who attended Hales Franciscan High School.

When I sat down to talk with Johnaton, we talked about how he started to play baseball and what the comradery is like with the Cougar team.  Let’s see what this Cougar had to say!

When did you start getting into sports?

I got my start at a very young age. I started when I was about 3 or 4 years old.  Baseball was my passion and I’ve been playing it ever since.

Growing up, who was your role model?

My dad and my uncle were the people I looked up to the most.

Why did you come to Saint Xavier University?

It was close to home and I wanted to stay by my family.

How do you prepare for a game?

I would listen to some Metalica or System of a Down then get a good stretch in and get a bood toss in.

Baseball is one of the most difficult sports to schedule games because you never know what the weather will be like.  This season so far has been tough due to a lot rescheduling and cancellations.  How do you adjust during these situations?

Just staying loose any way possible.  Also just to have positive energy throughout the game or whenever game is rescheduled. You have to have an open mind and just be flexible.

Saint Xavier University has a rich baseball history with a lot of success.  What is your goal each season either personally or as a team?

It is always a goal as a team to win the conference and go as far as we can

What was the most memorable game you’ve played as a baseball player?

I remember the game where I hit my first homerun in high school.  It was a good feeling hearing that sound coming off the bat.  I knew it was gone as soon as I heard that sound.

What is a team you look forward to playing each season and why?

St. Ambrose for sure. I live for rivalries and it makes each game so much better.  It also makes things entertaining.

What do you plan to do after you graduate?

I plan to start my career somewhere in the criminal justice field.  Not really sure what I specifically want to do with my degree in that field yet.

Cardio or weights?

Definitely weights.

What is your favorite ice cream?

Chocolate

Thanks for taking the time to talk with me Johnaton!  Good luck to you and the rest of the team.

Stick around for the next edition of Athlete Profile.  This next Cougar will make a speedy appearance.
