Around the Cougar Den: Part I

At Saint Xavier University, our Cougars are rock stars on and off the field.  They really embody what is means to be a student-athlete.

It’s not easy juggling around classes, practices, games, and extra workouts in between everything else that happens during the season, but their hard work does not go unnoticed.

Multiple Cougars get recognized each year for their work either in the classroom or in their respected sport.  As the 2017-2018 academic year winds down at Saint Xavier University, I think it would be a good time to mention some of the honors and recognitions all athletes have deserved throughout the year, and yes, I mean all sports around Saint Xavier.

Now here’s the problem (which is a good problem to have), a lot of the athletes at SXU are so awesome that there isn’t enough room to fit them all.  So here is part one of around the Cougar Den:

Baseball

Senior outfielder Cam Powell: Powell picked up the first recognition of the 2018 baseball season by receiving the CCAC Player of the Week (March 27th, 2017).

This is Powell’s first CCAC Player of the Week and the first for the Cougar baseball team since 2016.

Women’s Basketball

Senior guard Kara Krolicki: Krolicki led the Cougars to their 2nd consecutive appearance to the Fab Four in the NAIA Women’s Basketball Tournament in Sioux City.

Kara was recently named one out of ten players to be included in the WBCA NAIA Coaches’ All-American Team for the third year in a row.  Along with this honor, Kara was also named on the College Division Second Team Honors on CoSIDA Academic All-American team list.  This is her fourth year on this list.

As if that wasn’t enough, for the second consecutive year Kara was named the NAIA Player of the Year.  Kara was also named CCAC Player of the Year for the second time.

She also leaves SXU as the all-time leading scorer with 2,750 points as her four years as a Cougar.

Senior center Brittany Collins: Collins was also a leader in the Cougars 2nd appearance in the Fab Four.  Collins received an Honorable Mention in the WBCA NAIA Coaches’ All-American Team.

Collins was also named NAIA All-American with First Team Honors.  She is only the fifth Cougar in the program’s history to receive this honor.  Brittany is the all-time leader in blocked shots at SXU with 338 blocks.

Sophomore guard Chanel Fanter: All-CCAC Honorable Mention

Sophomore guard Maddie Welter: All-CCAC Honorable Mention

Men’s Basketball

Senior point guard Quinn Niego: Niego earned College Division Second Team honors in the CoSIDA Academic All-American Team for the 2nd consecutive year.

He is a two-time Academic All-American.  He was also named with the NAIA Scholar Athlete honor.

Quinn is the thirteenth ranked scorer in the NAIA and has the highest free throw percentage in the program’s history at 87.7%

Senior guard Lucas Daurer: Daurer earned NAIA Scholar Athlete

Senior guard Jared Jones: Jones earned NAIA Scholar Athlete

Junior guard Chris Soczek: Soczek earned NAIA Scholar Athlete

Senior center Kevin Fervil: Fervil earned NAIA Scholar Athlete

Junior guard Jacob Strong: Strong earned NAIA Scholar Athlete

Junior guard Tyler Diehl: Diehl earned NAIA Scholar Athlete

***Seven Cougars from the Men’s Basketball team earned NAIA Scholar Athlete Honors

Look out for next week’s edition of “The Xavierite” to see part two of the accomplishments of these stellar athletes at SXU.
