The hectic and chaotic world of medicine has taken over our screens. Every year, we have seen shows like Grey’s Anatomy and Chicago Med gain in popularity for its dramatic storyline and inside look of the medical field, and now, there is another spectacular show to add to the list. The new NBC hit called Transplant is a must watch, and it adds a new element to the growing medical drama genre that has taken over television in the last few years. It can be viewed on NBC on Tuesday nights, and on Hulu the next day after it premieres on live television.
The show, Transplant, is about a man named Bashir Hamed played by new, and upcoming actor, Hamza Haq, who is a Syrian doctor that had to flee to the United States with his little sister due to his country becoming a warzone. When he arrived in America, he unfortunately could not pursue medicine until he went through medical school and residency with credentials from America. Due to this, Hamed became a dishwasher to support himself and his sister. One night while he was working, there was a huge accident when a bus crashed through the restaurant. There were multiple people in the restaurant in desperate need of medical help and Hamed came to the rescue. Coincidently, one of the people he ended up saving was the head doctor at a high-profile hospital. Fortunately, due to Hamed’s quick action towards all the victims, everyone survived that explosion and once the head doctor, Dr. Jed Bishop, woke up and realized what occurred, he offered Hamed the opportunity to practice medicine in the United States.
This show does a great job of keeping the viewers in suspense and waiting for what’s to come. It also shows great representation for Arab Muslims that has not been seen in the past. Authentic and correct representation is so important to shows on TV, and the fact that the creation of this show was meant to show Arab Muslims in a positive light, adds to its greatness. It also shows other people of color on the show, and it embraces different people and cultures. Even the white people on the show want to learn more about Bashir’s life and how he became such an incredible doctor. The empathy and compassion it takes to be great doctors and nurses is displayed on the show and is embraced by all the characters no matter their background. Even though the characters have their ups and downs, the show portrays great characters that care about people and do everything they can to ensure their health and safety.
This show conveys a great mix of using the hospital setting, as well as, showing unconventional ways of saving people using surrounding resources. The medical cases are also very interesting and are inspired by articles or news stories that have claimed national or international attention. All with an enticing story to tell and a great lesson to learn at the end of each episode. There are more dramatic stories on the way, so look out for episodes coming out every week!
