An Introvert’s Guide to Halloween

Halloweekend is one of the most talked about times of the year, usually highlighting late night parties or raves. Yet for those who don’t necessarily enjoy a big crowd, Halloweekend may seem unappealing.

As one of those people, I decided to do some research to make my own Halloween plans with friends. Here are some of my findings for those who adore spooky season but prefer a chill night out. I hope this list helps you figure out your plans or gives you some fun suggestions for next year.

Go to a haunted house

A classic. I think haunted houses are a wonderful choice for people who don’t like to party but still enjoy activities that get your heart pumping. Some may find them overrated, but with proper research this can be a highlight to a night out with friends.

It is important to know what level of scare factor you can handle or prefer when researching haunted houses. You don’t want to be bored out of your mind by the end or so scared you can’t even get through the first half.

Stay in and watch movies

Some of you may not enjoy public outings at all, and that’s okay too. Keeping it chill and watching movies can become a cherished memory.

I grew up chronically sick during fall and spent many Halloweens watching movies with family; they’re still my favorite memories to this day. If you curate a good list and prepare food in advance it can be a wonderful night spent with family or friends.

Personally, I firmly believe that watching (almost) every “Halloweentown” movie is non-negotiable—and we never speak of “Return to Halloweentown.”

Host a small costume contest/party with a few friends

Before you get confused, I’m using the term party very loosely here. Parties don’t need to be crazy, big, or cliché. People underestimate how fun a small gathering can be.

Get together with a few friends and meet at someone’s place. A small party can be so fun with the right people. You can play whatever spooky tunes you want or even have a Halloween karaoke night.

If your friends are down, you could also have a costume contest and make it as fun as you’d like. Have everyone come in the most ridiculous or elaborate costumes ever; I guarantee it’ll be a night you won’t forget.

Dress up and go to a theater

This one’s for the film lovers. I know there’s someone out there with a stacked Letterboxd account that would love this.

I recommend doing research to see what’s allowed to be worn at your local theater before attempting, but dressing up to see a movie is such a fun experience.

I may have experienced watching “Inside Out” whilst wearing a themed outfit tailored to the film (unfortunately it was too last minute to get a fully decked out Disgust costume), and the memory of it still makes me chuckle.

This one is perfect for those who love to be silly with friends, and it’s a perfect excuse to take group photos after.

Escape room

A pricier option among the others, so I’d only recommend it if you’re willing to spend more. Escape rooms are a fun option for those who don’t really like planning events.

They’re also good for those who get easily scared and want to take it easy on the horror but still have a good time. Otherwise, it’s a fun way to bond with others as it requires teamwork to actually escape and solve the puzzles and riddles.

I do recommend planning ahead if you go for this option as they do require reservations. It’s best for small/medium sized groups as the capacity is usually around six to eight people depending on the escape room.

Ghost tour

Okay, I might need you to hear me out on this one. Yes, that says ghost tour. Personally, I’ve been on a ghost/haunted tour, and had so much fun.

Usually, these tours entail history/storytelling, using devices to “communicate” with spirits, and of course visiting haunted landmarks or places.

It’s one of those things where you need to believe in the supernatural a bit to enjoy it, but even if you don’t it’s still a fun outing to go with friends if you let yourself play into it.

Chicago is known for being one of the most haunted cities, so there’s an abundance of these tours around, but I do advise doing research on other’s experiences to know if it’s for you.Hopefully this list could help fellow introverts figure out some ideas for this Halloween or even future ones! Stay safe and have a fun Halloween.
