It is that time of year again; Saint Xavier University’s 2023-24 school year is coming to an end and preparation for the fall 2024 semester is in the works. This also means it is almost time for returning residents to claim their spots to live on campus for the upcoming school year.
Isaac Torres, Housing Operations Specialist for Saint Xavier’s Residence Life, and Katy Thompson, Vice President of Student Life, have been preparing for another successful school year. Here is everything returning residents need to know to prepare for a smooth transition.
Before applying for housing, students should first make sure they have registered for classes as a full time student, which means taking at least 12 credit hours. There is still time to add or drop classes for anyone looking to make changes.
If students have not yet submitted their housing application, there is still time to get that in. Submit it by April 15 to be considered for the housing lottery. Saint Xavier’s site provides a guide on how to apply for housing for students interested.
For students who are eligible for the housing lottery, it is set to take place on April 18. Residents who are a part of a full roommate group will get priority in room selection. Lottery time slots will be announced the week of April 15. Torres and Thompson encourage students to check their emails for additional details.
For students not in a roommate group, Saint Xavier’s housing staff will create groups based on rooming preferences and interests given on the application.
The last date to take note of would be for residents who plan on not returning for housing. The deadline for the withdrawal form is April 29.
For the upcoming school year, there are some changes to residence life meant to have a positive impact on the experience students have with the university.
“Recently, the Residence Life and Campus Life departments merged to create the Office of Student Development,” Thompson mentioned. “This merger is driven by our commitment to providing students with a comprehensive and streamlined co-curricular program and support services throughout their time here, whether they are a resident or commuter.”
It is clear that the staff makes decisions to not only benefit the students who live here, but the ones who commute and spend their time in the university’s academic buildings.
On April 1, a new Student Life staff member was welcomed. Mercedes Amador now serves as the Executive Director for Student Development.
“We look forward to her leadership and professional experiences contributing positively to the work in Student Life,” Thompson added. “Students will soon begin meeting the newly hired live-on staff who will work with our student leaders to manage programming, activities, and the day-to-day life on campus.”
As the future for residence life is looking bright, there are still some concerns with dorming that students have brought forward. A couple of these include the temperatures in particular buildings and the ability to use the laundry facilities provided on each dorm floor.
The housing staff is well aware of the problems that have been brought up, and they plan to continue moving forward with the communication and adjustments necessary to ensure a great experience for all residents.
“The housing staff communicates regularly and works closely with housekeeping, maintenance, building engineers, public safety, and information technology staff, among other departments, to mitigate issues reported in the residence halls,” Torres explained. “During the summer, we work with the Facilities Management Department to make proactive repairs and updates in the buildings to ensure that they are prepared for the following academic year.”
It is looking like the 2024-25 school year has a lot to be excited about. Be sure to get your applications in and check your emails so that you can select the perfect room for you.
