On September 30, the Saint Xavier men’s soccer team beat Calumet College of St. Joseph 5-0 at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field. The Cougars offense was led by freshman midfielder Jaedan Aguilera, who had a hat trick in the game. He leads the team with ten goals.
Saint Xavier dominated possession of the ball. The Cougars allowed only six shots, with one on goal. The Cougars meanwhile had 20 shots, with nine on goal.
The match opened with an own goal in the 7 minute, courtesy of a deflection from a CCSJ defender to give Saint Xavier an early 1-0 lead. The Cougars continued to keep most of the possession until the 18th minute, when the first official player goal was scored by Aguilera from 10 yards out on the left side.
Calumet goalkeeper Jose Molina made two big saves halfway through the first half on back-to-back shots from forward Dorian Mahone and midfielder Valente Lara Jr. Molina stifled that huge threat from the Cougars, but despite his efforts couldn’t stop them from scoring more.
The first half ended with two more goals from SXU. The first of the two came in the 32nd minute from Mahone, for his second of the year, with an assist from Aguilera. The last goal of the first half was a phenomenal header by Aguilera for his second of the match, and an assist from Angel Lopez.
The second half saw the Cougars playing fantastic defense and allowing the only shot on goal for CCSJ in the 52 minute. Giving credit to his teammates for the team’s success on defense, Jaedan Aguilera said, “It all comes from our center backs Julio (Rodriguez) and Axel (Gongora)”.
The last goal came from Aguilera shortly after he subbed back in late in the second. On a breakaway in the 87 minute, Aguilera took the ball from midfield to 15 yards out from the goal to complete his hat trick, and put an emphasis on the Cougars dominant game.
The Cougars hope to continue to play and train the way they have been recently to keep momentum going into future matches. Aguilera believes if they continue down this path they’ll have a “good chance” of going deep into the CCAC tournament. Their next three games are at home, including one against rival Saint Francis on the 23, scheduled for a 7:00pm start.
