Despite the disappointing 20-7 loss to Davenport University, SXU would find something to celebrate over the weekend. Junior kicker Abdul Mahdi was named to the Fred Mitchell Award September watch list.
The Fred Mitchell award is presented to the nation’s top place-kickers in Division II, Division III, NAIA, and NJCAA. Out of the 16 kickers, Mahdi was one of 16 total players, one of 4 juniors named, and most importantly the only NAIA kicker to be named for the watch list of the award.
Over the course of the 5 games this season, Mahdi boasts 27 points, 3 of which coming from field goals. Not only does the Fred Mitchell award recognize excellent play, but community service as well. Mahdi has been involved in many community service projects with the most prominent being him spending the whole day cleaning Marquette park, the largest park on the south side of Chicago.
If Mahdi were to win the award, he would be the first cougar to win it since Tom Lynch won it back-to-back in the 2009-2010/2010-2011 seasons. This is most important as the 10-11 season was the year SXU won their first NAIA National Championship. Mahdi will have a chance to continue to make his case for winning the award Saturday, October 8, when they match up against Concordia University.
