A Not-So Basic Fall Bucket List

With September nearing its end, fall is rapidly approaching, and that means one thing. If you have not yet made a bucket list of how to celebrate the season, now is the perfect time. Here is a collection of five festive activities to start you off.

Fall 5K at the Morton Arboretum

Want to spend a day outside when the leaves are starting to change? The Morton Arboretum in Lisle, Illinois is hosting a Fall Color 5K Run and Walk on October 1. Participants can choose to start at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start to the race or at 9:30 a.m. for the open start. If you’re not keen on running, don’t worry! Running is not mandatory if you are looking for a fun event to get outside and be surrounded by nature.

There is also an option to do the 5K virtually! This means you can run a 5K anywhere at any time and submit the results. All participants will still receive a shirt. The event will cost $50 to run in-person or $45 for the virtual substitute.

Fall Fest at Lincoln Park Zoo

Looking for a reason to head downtown? The Lincoln Park Zoo has just the event for you! Their fall fest starts September 30 and goes till October 30. It will go from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. While admission is free, attraction add-ons range from $36-$69. Some of the attractions include Ferris wheel rides, a maze, slides, a pumpkin walk, and more.

The zoo’s website has a calendar showing the days the pumpkin patch and attractions will be open. As well as this, the zoo is also hosting other events throughout October like Haunted History Tours and Spooky Zoo Spectacular. Be sure to check their calendar to find the right day for you!

Massacre Haunted House

Want to be spooked before Halloween? For any fear-seekers out there, Massacre Haunted House will open its doors on September 24 for the 2022 season. From then on, the attraction will be ready to scare guests. The house will be open on Thursdays through Sundays as well as Halloween Monday on October 31.

The price fluctuates based on the day and time guests choose to go with Thursdays and Sundays being $29.99. The most expensive ticket will be $34.99. There are optional add-ons to pay to skip the line. If you dare to attend, the haunt can be found at 299 Montgomery Road in Montgomery, Illinois.

SXU Drama Halloween Revue Show

Save the date! SXU Drama plans to host a Halloween-themed talent show that you will not want to miss. There will be singing, dancing, and a variety of other acts chosen and prepared by the performers themselves.

It will take place on Friday, October 21 at 7:45 p.m. in McGuire Hall. Admission will be free and the show will take place right on campus and is open to all. If anything changes, make sure to check the Den or RSVP so you can be the first to know through an email. Don’t forget to have your event pass ready!

Being festive at home

Do not worry if you are unable to attend any of these events. It is just as easy to be festive in the comfort of your own home. Rather than trying to carve real pumpkins that will have to be tossed at the end of the season, buy small fake pumpkins to paint. This would not only be fun to do with friends, but will last forever. Or, try a new fall recipe you stumbled across online. Other options are having a bonfire, decorating the house, and watching scary movies. There are plenty of ways to celebrate fall without having to go out and spend a lot of money!

With that, these are five ways to be extra festive this year on top of attending your favorite pumpkin patch or going apple picking. Have a good spooky season!
