Well, it is certainly hard to believe that my time at The Xavierite has come to an end. It feels like yesterday I walked through the office door for an interview and here I am 4 years later about to close this great chapter of my life with so much knowledge and opportunity under my belt.
My time at The Xavierite has been such a learning, rewarding, and memorable experience and I would like to share my journey throughout the years that I have worked here as well as some of my final thoughts with all of you.
When I arrived at Saint Xavier, I already knew the career path that I was going to take. Actually, I knew many years ago what I wanted to be when I grew up and that was a journalist. I have always had a passion for writing and over the years would write things here and there but never did anything with the pieces.
Fast forward to the summer of 2014 at FOCUS, I came across The Xavierite table. During high school, I was unable to join our newspaper due to being involved in sports and juggling school work so now was the perfect time for me to focus on what I really wanted to do.
The first position that I held at The Xavierite was being a copy editor starting in the fall of 2014. This job of course did not involve writing but the following semester, I got to move up to Deputy Features Editor and write various entertainment related articles.
Entertainment journalism is what I want to go into so writing these types of articles was very beneficial. I held that position for 2 years until I moved up yet again to the head of the section as the Senior Features Editor.
I got to take on more middle spreads and write some interesting pieces like an interview with a photoplay organist from The Silent Film Society of Chicago. Being Editor in Chief of The Xavierite was always a goal since I started working here so I was happy that I was able to fulfill that during my final two semesters here at Saint Xavier.
While I held this position, I got to do some pretty cool things like cover three plays/events for the Goodman Theatre, interview gubernatorial candidates like J.B. Pritzker, interview multiple bands, and cover the Heroes and Villains/Walker Stalker Fan Fest where I got to meet and see various celebrities from television shows (also got to meet a member of the Backstreet Boys…no big deal).
Aside from the obvious writing aspect of the job, being able to interact with my staff on a daily basis was the best part of the job. They were the most entertaining group I have ever come across and they were a joy to work with each week.
Overall, I think people who are passionate about journalism should definitely be a part of The Xavierite. This is a great learning experience and you get to meet and make memories with some of the best people you will ever meet. It has always been a hope of mine since I started here that people will hear more about us and show interest and I think we are starting to gain more attention from students and other people from the school and the community which is great to see. I am so grateful that I got to be apart of something so special and I would not have traded my time here for anything in the world. On to the next chapter.
