Ken’s Corner Sports Report 10/7

We had some CCAC action as the 13-10 SXU Cougars defended their court against the 12-14 Cardinal Stretch University.

Set 1

The first set saw SXU take 25-21 set victory. This outcome was do impart to the strong play of sophomores Rory Manion and Helena Atton.  Both players combined for 11 of SXU’s 15 total kills in that set. A dominant display for both ladies who continue to build chemistry, while making their names know to their opponents.

Set 2

This one was a bit more closely contested, but that didn’t stop SXU from going up 2 sets to none as they beat CSU 26-24 in this set. Both teams were going tick for tat, as they traded points throughout this set. Admittedly, SXU shouldn’t have won this set, as CSU was outplaying them near the end of this one, but CSU slipped up and had a couple of service errors that really cost them. With the momentum of 2 set victories behind them, SXU was looking to close out this one and get the W in the 3rd set.

Set 3

This would end up being the final set as SXU won 25-16, and won the game sweeping CSU 3 sets to none. SXU looked determined from the jump, as they took off with a 6-2 lead in the beginning stages. While CU did bring it as close as 12-10, SXU fueled another run that eventually propelled them to the victory. Manion and Atton played big time here as they both posted up 12 kills for the game, further asserting their dominance.

It’s great to get a big win especially heading into tournament play. SXU will compete in the two-day CCAC Crossover Tournament. For a recap of that event and many others, keep it locked here at the Xavierite.
