Cougars Celebrate 2-1 Win Over Judson

sxu-womens-soccerSaint Xavier’s women’s soccer team is in the midst of a grueling conference schedule that stretches to October 29. The Cougars, who are 2-8-1 overall on the season, looked to build off their 1-0 win over Purdue University Northwest last week.

On October 1, Saint Xavier hosted Judson University in a CCAC matchup. Senior goal keeper Alex Perry shut down the Eagles through the first 80 minutes, totaling 10 saves.

It wasn’t until late in the game Judson capitalized on any offensive chance, but by that time, the Cougars were well on their way to a victory. Goals by sophomore Alyssa Gaede and senior Brittany Kroening helped lift Saint Xavier to a satisfying 2-1 win.

Gaede got the Cougars on the board in the first half by scoring the game’s initial tally. In the 34th minute, sophomore Brooke Mejdrich substituted into the match and had an immediate impact. The defenseman/midfielder set Gaede up nicely just two minutes after being put into the game and Gaede hammered it home.

Judson was relentless on offense in the first half. The Eagles totaled eight shots on goal, but Perry was up to the task. Saint Xavier entered the locker room at half-time enjoying a 1-0 lead.

In the 66th minute, Judson put together an opportune scoring chance, but Perry was there, yet again, for the save. On the Cougar counter-attack, Brittany Kroening handled an Alexis Espositista-Aliga pass and beat the Judson goalie to put her team up 2-0.

After an Eagles goal in the 80th minute, Saint Xavier’s defense held steady for the remainder of regulation. The 2-1 victory was their second conference win of the season and their record improved to 2-3 in the CCAC.

The Cougars will host Roosevelt University on Saturday, October 8 at 5:30 PM. Saint Xavier hopes to honor its seniors with another conference victory on what will be Senior Day.
