Ken’s Sports Recap 9/30

Volleyball

It was just yesterday when the now 12-10 Cougars went on the road to go up against the 2-15 Robert Morris. Coming off a disappointing 0-3 finish in the Panther Invitational tournament, SXU was eager to regain any confidence they may have lost

Set 1

This set was a bit of a shock to the system for SXU as they lost 26-24. SXU was up 21-18, but allowed RMU to go on an 8-4 run that gave them all the momentum for the win. Seeing how close it was makes the loss more painful, but the desire to avenge the loss grow stronger.

Set 2

The set was pretty closely contested at the start, but then SXU started to find a groove. Down 6-4, SXU went on a 9-1 run to put them up 13-7. Sitting at 24-14, the set was seemingly in SXU’s hands, but RMU was determined. RMU went on a 4-0 run to bring the game as close as 18-24. SXU may have blew it last set, but not this one as the got the final point and won the set 25-18. The game is now tied 1 set apiece.

Set 3

With both teams tied at 1 set apiece, this set would put someone up and give them momentum heading into the 4th set. SXU apparently realized this a lot sooner than RMU as the Cougars dominated this set, taking it 25-13. Sophomore Rory Manion was all over the place in this set, and essentially the whole game. Manion finished the day with 15 of the teams 54 total kills.

Set 4

Up 2-1, SXU needed to win this set if they wanted to close out this game early. This would come easy though as RMU was determined to take this to 5 sets. Despite being down 19-14 late, RMU would not let up easily as they went on a 6-3 run to bring the set to 20-22. Despite their efforts to keep the game close and take it to 5 sets, RMU was unable to keep up with the momentum of SXU as they won the set 25-22 and the game at 3-1.

The Cougars return back to action this coming Tuesday October 4th as they take on Cardinal Stretch University at home.
