Hispanic Heritage Month begins with Bachata Lessons

fullsizerenderChicanos Bachateros, a new organization on campus that teaches bachata dance lessons to SXU students, will host the very first event for Hispanic Heritage month. The Xavierite spoke with Ruben Robles, president of Chicano Bachateros, to learn more details about this event that will kick off Hispanic Heritage Month at SXU.

“Hispanic Heritage Month is a time for Latinos to embrace their religion and culture with pride rather than having to worry about facing discrimination. Especially, it embraces others to learn more about cultural diversity,” said Robles.

The event will be hosted on Thursday, September 15th, at the Diner Atrium from 11am to 1pm. Basic bachata moves will be demonstrated by members of the organization who will also help teach the dance moves to students.

“Since we are a cultural based organization, we hope to build community and strengthen the acceptance of diversity on campus by hosting interactive events. All SXU staff and SXU students are able to attend any events,” said Robles.

Robles also shared the details of another event coming up on Saturday, October 1st. The event is entitled Super Saturday. The carnival-themed event will feature music, dance and food; sponsored by Chicano Bachateros and UNIDOS.

Chicano Bachateros is open to all SXU students. The bi-weekly practices take place in the Shannon Center’s Dance Studio, Tuesdays at 6:00pm and Wednesdays at 7:30pm.
