After 9 days, 254 designers and 69 shows, New York Fashion Week has officially come to a close. Running from September 9th-Septermber 17th, this biannual event brought out big name designers from all over to showcase their Spring/Summer 2016 collections. Below you will find highlights from a few of the biggest shows.
Betsey Johnson- Creating over the top designs since the 1960’s, Betsey Johnson’s collection was anything but boring. Celebrating 50 years in the fashion business, Johnson’s collection was broken down into six parts.
The first part was called “Limelight”. This portion consisted of bold, fun, and bright colors along with some glitter and sequins. Big flouncy skirts were also all the rage in this category.
The next part was called “Palladium” which was 80’s inspired. Crazy neon prints and corsets were seen on every outfit that came up and down the runway. The third category that had a British punk rock vibe was called “Mud Club”.
Some outfits included black studded belts, edgy matching jacket and pantsuits, and fingerless biker gloves. “Electric Circus” was the next set that was part 70’s hippie and clown inspired. Color block jackets and pants were paired with knee high socks that contained multi-colored stripes.
A 60’s mod feel collection called “Max’s Kansas City” was next. Different looks consisted of tops paired with black tights and metallic was included in every look. Johnson’s final collection, Ann K. Pimm was dedicated and named after her 94-year-old dance teacher.
These looks contained candy stripes and also what appeared to be little bellhop hats tilted to the side. Even though she is 73 years old, she still ended the show by doing some of her signature moves including the splits.
Givenchy- The Givenchy show brought out all the stars and its location was cleverly chosen. The show was on September 11th and was located on Pier 26 which overlooked Ground Zero. Celebrities such as Julia Roberts, Nicki Minaj, and Kanye West and Kim Kardashian West were just a few of many in attendance at this event.
This was one of the most talked-about shows for this fashion week season. Creative director Riccardo Tisci was even given the title of “The King of Fashion Week” by The New York Times. This show consisted of couture pieces, denim looks, and ready-to-wear men’s and women’s pieces.
A majority of the collection contained sheer, flowy white or black pieces such as dresses and tops, while other looks added jackets to their ensemble. Overall, this show was a step in the right direction due to past shows critics described as “poorly organized and chaotic”.
Diane von Furstenberg- This fashion show was themed around female empowerment and was nothing short of it. DVF’s collection was inspired by the Roman Goddess of luck and freedom “Fortuna”.
Models Karlie Kloss, Kendall Jenner, and the sister model-duo Gigi and Bella Hadid were just a few famous faces that graced the runway. Every model sported a floral hair accessary which was potentially to pay homage to DVF’s go-to look in the 70’s.
They also all wore teal eyeshadow which added a dramatic effect and made each of them stand out. Some looks included sheer printed rompers, patterned jumpsuits, and wrap dresses. Florals were in general just a big part in the show.
From the hair pieces to the prints, they were everywhere. The colors were primarily soft and bright on all of the outfits. Hot pink, crème, mango, gold, and teal were all colors that tied into the looks somehow. Kate Upton, Karolina Kurkova, and Diane Sawyer were just a few that were front row at the show.
The Weeknd was also there to cheer on his girlfriend Bella Hadid. Diane von Furstenberg ended the show by going around to guests and shaking their hands and then waving her own hands in the air in celebration of a good show.
New York Fashion Week would not be complete without a little controversy and some questionable moments. The brand Opening Ceremony collaborated with the New York City Ballet for the show which meant that the models were actually dancers. Guests were a little alarmed when one of the dancers fell while walking down the runway.
Soon after, others were tripping while walking the curved path which led some to question the show. In the end, it was confirmed that it all was staged.
Another problem occurred during Victoria Beckham’s show. Many criticized that the models that were used were extremely thin. All in all, this year’s NYFW was one for the books.
