The start of a school year equates to many things. New classes, new teachers, new relationships, and most importantly the start of a new athletic season for athletes. For two athletes in particular, the season may have just started, but they have already gone on to shine.
First, we’ll start off with sophomore Taylor Thompson.
Thompson is currently having an amazing season so far leading the Cougars Women’s golf team to impressive finishes at the most recent couple of tournaments.
The most impressive performance came at the Stonewolf intercollegiate two day tournament in which Thompson scored a total score of 162 points leading her team to another second place finish which was the first of five to come.
Thompson didn’t stop there. During the William Woods invitational, Thompson led the team with a score of 80 after the first day. That wasn’t even the most impressive part as she finished the second day of the tournament with a score of 71. Totaling six birdies.
This impressive play hasn’t gone unnoticed as she has been selected as a CCAC Women’s Golfer of the week for two straight weeks. The fact that Thompson has not only won the award not once, but twice just shows the extraordinary talent that Thompson has for the game of golf.
Although the women hit a bit of a road block the past week’s Deer Classic tournament, I’m sure the women and Thompson especially will rebound and continue to show a consistence dominance throughout their next tournaments, and with their next tournament the Crusader Classic Coming up on September 24-September 25.
Moving on to the next female athlete worthy of recognition is senior Nicole Nonnemacher. Nonnemacher is a pitcher for the Cougar softball team.
She is coming off one of her best seasons coming in last year. Nonnemacher was a NCFA All-American, and a NAIA Pitcher of the Year. This award marked her second year straight winning it placing her in the record books for the first and only SXU athlete to win multiple NAIA player of the year awards.
Nonnemacher led the team to by far one of their best seasons with a 46-7-2 record and a number five overall record in the NAIA Softball 25 poll. As the Softball season gets ready to cook this coming spring season, you can expect the softball team, and Nicole Nonnemacher to be prepared to seek the same success they enjoyed last season.
Let’s continue to root for our female athletes as they continue to excel in their given sports.
