On Thursday February 26, 2015, the Saint Xavier Council (SXC) plans to host a talent for the students of Saint Xavier University. Beginning at 7:00pm in McGuire Hall, this upcoming event will allow students to both show off their talents and watch others perform.

Jessica Heller, Executive Vice President of Programming for the SXC, spoke with the Xavierite via email to give some information and insight on the Talent Show. “The Talent Show came up as an alternative to the Ms. Scarlet and Mr. Gray pageant. The Saint Xavier Council Executive Board felt that we wanted to include as many students as wanted to participate. The criteria for the Talent Show is that you are a current SXU student, part or full-time.

Unlike the Pageant, there is no requirement for GPA or grade level. We had originally planned to hold the Pageant and spent a few months planning for it before we made the switch. We have been planning for the Talent Show since before classes broke for Winter Break,” said Heller.

Though anyone is allowed to perform in this show, there are still auditions for interested students. The purpose of these auditions is to ensure that each act is appropriate and acceptable for performance the day of the event.

Even for the students who do not wish to perform, it is encouraged that they spread the word about this event for a great turnout.
“In planning for the Talent Show, we have to consider the appropriateness of the acts for a Catholic University. It is also important to consider how much time is needed to spread the word and excitement of the program,” said Heller.

Heller is not the only person who is planning and preparing for this event.  She explains that there are others involved.
“Alex Clemmons, the Director of Nights & Weekends, and myself have been planning the show. We have also pulled in Brandon Swanson, Executive Vice President of Student Senate, to help spread the word to students, both for attendance and participation,” Heller said.

Some students who are ready to perform have already signed up. Heller notes that there are already many groups who are on the list to perform.
“As of Friday, we had 20 students show up. We are expecting that to become about 10 or so acts as there are two group performances scheduled,” said Heller.

For Heller, and likely other students as well, she is excited about the upcoming SXC Talent Show. It is a great opportunity to show off some great talent, or just go and watch some acts.
“I am most looking forward to a great showcase of SXU Talent. It’s nice to see what the student body is capable of, aside from the academia of everyday classes. Also, watching everyone come out to support each other shows how much school spirit SXU has,” Heller said.

If a student is interested in coming to the show or signing up to perform, there is still time to do so. To sign up, or if you have any questions, you can contact Jessica Heller for all of the information you will need.

“We will extend sign ups until Friday February 20, 2015. Students can email me at heller.j01@mymail.sxu no later than 4:00pm that day. It is also important that students sign up soon enough to allow time for SXC Staff to see their act and place it into the show,” Heller said.

A full run through of the show is planned for Wednesday, February 25. Mark your calendars for this and other SXC sponsored events, you won’t want to miss out!
