St. Xavier University’s first home football game not only brought many spectators to the stands, but a victory for the Cougars as well. Held on Saturday, September 13, at the Bruce R. Deaton memorial field, the Cougars defeated the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds 19 to 14.

This game may have been the first home game of the year, but it was also the first SXU game for many of the freshmen and transfer students.

For freshman Starsha Mckinnie, “The first home football game was fun and a great way to get to know some new people.”

Watching the game with friends and cheering on the team provided for an enjoyable night, but no football game would be complete without the cheerleaders, the Paw Prints, and the marching band; Saturday night’s game had just that.

With performances by the Paw Prints and the marching band at halftime, these groups entertained the audience with their talent and routines.

As noted by Anna Ohara, “the halftime show was great, the band was excellent and you could tell they have been working hard on their routine.

The dance team was also great, their routine was very put together, in sync, and fun to watch.”

With the completion of their acts, they were back in the stands or on the sidelines, enthusiastically spreading school spirit throughout the stadium.

Although it was cold the night of the football game, there was an energetic atmosphere.

In addition to the students of SXU, many of the observers at Saturday night’s game were those of the community.

For Alyssa Dapaolo, “It was great to see that the community came out to watch, not only the students. It was also nice to see everyone in SXU apparel, and I was really excited when we won.”

Be sure to keep up with the 2014 football schedule to attend a game, and to cheer on the Cougars.
