Saint Xavier classes are back in session, which brings students, activities, and Welcome Week to the college. Commuters and residents alike were able to join in on the fun during Welcome Week events. Late – night bowling, performances and karaoke with Jamie Chura, “Maleficent” on the Quad, a trip to Navy Pier, and a Cubs game were amongst the many activities around campus to help kick off the school year. For the freshmen, it was an excellent opportunity to meet new people and get a feel for what campus living is actually like.

“Welcome week events were geared toward making people feel more comfortable and making them feel at home,” said sophomore RA Valencia Pringle, whose favorite Welcome Week event was the karaoke night. “All levels were able to come and share their talents, grow, and gain new friends in the process.”

The overall transition for the freshman was a successful one. Though it may have been hard for the residents to leave family and friends back home, everyone made friends, and for the most part, found where they fit in best. For those people who were missing home, there is always a useful piece of technology that makes it possible to still be in contact with their loved ones while away at college.

With the start of this new school year, there are many adjustments to be made. Sam Rizzi, a freshman music student, noted that there is “More independence, more responsibility, and overall so many more choices.” The transition from high school to college is a great one, which challenges the student while also bringing in an entirely new and exciting chapter to their lives. There are many opportunities to self – improve and become a better worker as well. Especially for the freshmen, it is a fresh start, a time to reconstruct their behavior or work harder towards the grades they desire. It is only the beginning of a great four years.

Involvement is another key to making the most out of the SXU experience. This is the advice given by nearly all students, with promises of fun, learning, and meeting fellow classmates with the same interests. Clubs, activities, or intramurals will only be a benefit, which will add to the enjoyment of attending the university, and provide a means to get out of the dorm and a break from doing homework.

Be sure to get involved and stay up to date with other SXU sponsored events throughout the year.
