A Belated Review: “The Purge: Anarchy”

People who are not safe during the annual purge: the ice cream guy, your neighbor who mows the lawn at seven in the morning, the mail man who throws your packages from Amazon.

In all seriousness, The “Purge Anarchy” places our modern day society into a new world order, ran by a corrupt regime who believe only by one being savage shall they be releasing their demons, hence the phrase “All crime is legal” Giving American civilians the right to exterminate anyone freely. During the commencement of the purge all emergency service are suspend for 12 hours; this includes hospital and police services.

The reason behind the annual purge is to a decrease crime rates and allow American citizen’s to release there negative emotions with murderous actions. Some let vengeance, jealousy and simply enjoyment drive their actions.   Not everyone participates in this heinous act of going on a murderous rampage. Protagonists like Eva (Carmen Ejogo) and Cali (Zoe Soul) flee for their salvation in refuse to participate in the annual purge.

United we stand and united we shall fall; blood of the heathen shall be spilled. Those who don’t part take in unleashing their beast. For they is who we purge for. Subliminal messages such as extermination of the less wealthy and unfortunate, are noticeable throughout the film. There is no doubt, “Purge Anarchy” is controversial and brings human nature to the question. Is the human race primarily motivated by wealth and dominance? If that’s the case, where is one’s humanity? Are we so driven to power that we forget we are humans first and a product of the government second? But through the plots obscurity there is a glimpse of hope.

The film truly gives the audience a feel of suspense while the fight for morality definitely shows in “The Purge Anarchy” amongst its cruel plot. I’d have to say this film is a definite must see. It conjures up questions to think about and it places you in the seat of suspense and gives two distinct points of view – the enemy and the vigilante.

I won’t tell you exactly who the vigilante is because I’d just be spoiling the film. With that being said. Will you part take in the annual purge?
