This season, things started off kind of rocky for women’s volleyball after they began the season 0-4 but since that point they’ve played much better volleyball.

After dropping the first match of the two-day SXU/Trinity Christian Crossover Tournament, the Cougars rebounded to win three-straight matches including the nightcap on the first day of the tournament against Huntington University.

On Saturday, the Cougars continued their winning ways by prevailing in both their matches. The first match of the day was against Spring Arbor University and it saw the Cougars winning in three sets: 25-22, 25-17, 25-19.

It was a great display of team play by the Cougars, as they got contributions from several different players. New sophomore middle blocker Heidi Gregerson had 6 kills and 2 solo blocks for the team. Junior co-captain and middle hitter Marie Hackert finished the match with a team high 9 kills and fellow junior co-captain and setter Kelli Shaffer led the team with 20 assists. Sophomore libero Lauren Young had a career-high five aces and junior Desiree Aramburu had a phenomenal day, tallying a career high five aces. She also led the team with 12 digs.

The last match of the day saw the Lady Cougars led by a lethal triple threat attack. Sophomore Meghan Falsey, Hackert and Gregerson all finished with double-digit kills for the match. Hackert had a team high with 13 to go along with Gregerson’s 12 and Falsey’s 11.  Assisting the triple threat attack was Shaffer, who had a career-high 38 assists to go along with 8 kills and 14 digs for a nice all around game.

The Cougars beat Judson University in four sets: 22-25, 25-12, 25-17, 25-13. The Eagles won a close first game, but the Cougars took over after that and went on to dominate the next three games.

Aramburu and Young continued their incredible play on Saturday. Aramburu had a team-best 20 digs and Young had 19 digs to along with 3 aces. Hackert and Gregerson also made their presence felt on the defensive end by combining for 12 blocks.

After early season struggles, the team seems to be clicking on all cylinders now as they get ready for more conference play. Fans who are a part of Cougar Nation should come out and watch the team play at their next home game on September 13 at 7:00.
