WXAV 88.3FM, Saint Xavier University’s (SXU) student radio station, will participate in College Radio Day on Friday, Oct. 2. They join college radio stations from around the world celebrating student radio. According to the College Radio Foundation, this event brings college radio stations together from all over the world.
Peter Kreten, Director of Student Media, said that College Radio Day is an opportunity to celebrate what makes college radio stations different from other radio stations.
“It’s a day to celebrate the most exciting way to listen to music. Spotify and streaming services just give you music. But college radio gives you music, personality, and stories. We want to learn more about our music and know why it matters. College Radio Day is a day where we celebrate what makes college radio special,” he explained.
World College Radio Day is an annual event organized by the College Radio Foundation. This event aims to encourage more students and listeners to get involved with college radio. According to the College Radio Foundation, the event gives stations a chance to promote themselves on and off campus.
The event is free to participate in. Participating stations are able to receive free radio content, including sweepers, liners, interviews and other materials to use during their broadcast.
The College Radio Foundation encourages stations to choose how they want to participate by creating their own special programs and activities. This can include; broadcasts, campus events, interviews and more.
Kreten explained how each station celebrates College Radio Day differently.
“Every station is different. There’s lots of planning that goes into it. You need to figure out what you are going to do. College Radio Day looks different at every station,” he said.
“Some stations broadcast from their diner. Others have local bands come in. Some do radio dramas. So it takes a lot of time determining what you will do. It’s all student planned and student executed,” Kreten continued.
WXAV is still planning their activities for this year’s celebration. Kreten shared that they are hoping to announce what they have planned shortly.
WXAV has participated in College Radio Day since 2011.
By participating in the event, WXAV will give SXU students and community an opportunity to learn more about student radio and participate in the event.
Niki Kowal, WXAV’s Music Director, will be participating in College Radio Day for the first time this year. She expressed her excitement to be a part of the event and explained what college radio means to her.
“This is going to be my first College radio day. I’m so excited to be apart of it, I’ve heard and seen so many good things relating to it that I know participating will be so special, College radio to me is honestly my home and my sense of belonging, without WXAV I wouldn’t know where my career would take me and now I have a much clearer path that I want to take,” Kowal said.
Kowal also explained why she believes college radio is important for students and the community.
“College radio is so important because it gives students a voice and a place to belong, WXAV was my main draw to SXU actually, I knew it was something I wanted to do, I think music is a universal language that everyone can communicate with, I have made so many friends through my music taste and being able to share it with the public is so fun,” Kowal explained.
Kreten said, “It allows student broadcasters to do something special. They may not have a band in studio on a normal show, but they do on College Radio Day. It’s a chance for them to experiment and try something new and outside of the box.”
The entire WXAV staff is able to participate in the event, along with members of the Xavierite and TV crew.
