First Half Headlines From the 2026 MLB Season

Posted on August 20, 2026

With the MLB All-Star Game fast approaching, the season nears its halfway point. It’s time to look back and analyze what we have learned from this season so far and what we can expect for the second half.

Current Division Leaders*

American League East:

The Tampa Bay Rays not only sit on top of their division with their 48-33 record but they also lead the American League overall. 22-year-old rising star Junior Caminero is continuing the success of last year by being in the top 10 in almost every offensive category, which has led to a strong first half for the Rays.

American League Central:

While just two years removed from the worst season in MLB history, the Chicago White Sox have made a surprising turn around that has them sitting in first place with a 44-39 record. A pretty young team with no real playoff aspirations—at least not at the start of the season—has turned some heads across the league. With still an entire second half yet to be played, White Sox fans can at least feel hopeful about the team’s future.

American League West:

What has been a pretty weak division has the Texas Rangers in first with a 43-42 record, because the division has been so weak it remains wide open for every team including the Los Angeles Angels who have experienced nothing but disappointment in the last few years.

National League East:

After a mediocre 2025 season the Atlanta Braves have returned back to their winning ways leading the NL East with a 49-33 record. While they are usually known for being a power hitting team, it’s actually their third best in all of baseball Earned Run Average (ERA) of 3.41 from their pitching staff that has played a big part in their season’s success.

National League Central:

Despite a rough start to the year the Milwaukee Brewers have found themselves in first place in what started out as a very competitive NL Central. The Brewers pitching staff led by Cy Young candidate Jacob Misiorowski has played a big part in their season success, their team combined ERA of 3.40 is the best in the NL and second best in all of baseball behind the New York Yankees (3.30).

National League West:

It’s no surprise that the back-to-back World Series champions Los Angeles Dodgers lead the NL West, their eyes are set on making it three straight titles and at the moment it looks like they just might as they currently hold the best record in all of baseball at 55-30.

Key Storylines

Since firing manager Rob Thomson, the Philadelphia Phillies have found a new stride under interim manager Don Mattingly. After a 9-19 start to the year the Phillies have now gone 38-18 in that stretch and have cut what was a 10 game deficit in the division down to just three games back, setting up an interesting race for the division title in the second half.

Shohei Ohtani continues to prove why he is the greatest of all time; the 4x MVP is already making a strong case for his fifth MVP title. On the mound he holds a 8-2 record with a 1.58 ERA, and as a hitter he has a slash line of .297/.412/.546 with 18 home runs and 50 RBIs.

The 2026 season has welcomed the Automated Ball-Strike System (ABS) which allows players to challenge a ball or strike in hopes to overturn the call in their favor. As we reach the halfway point in the season we have gotten to learn more about this new system and how it has changed the league for the better.

The Cincinnati Reds lead the league in challenge success rate with 62.6% while the Pittsburgh Pirates are at the bottom with a 41.1% success rate. In terms of position, it’s been the catchers who have been challenging the pitches the most. William Contreras of the Milwaukee Brewers ranks first among all catchers with 99 challenges and 53 correct calls for a 53.5% success rate.

Overall, the new system has received positive feedback from across the league and has helped improve the game in a positive way.

Looking Ahead

The 2026 All-Star Game will take place on Tuesday, July 14 at Citizen Bank Park in Philadelphia. Shohei Ohtani and Ernie Clement of the Toronto Blue Jays have already secured their spot in the midsummer classic but many spots are still open as voting continues until Thursday July 2, at noon est.

The MLB trade deadline is August 3 Which team will make the biggest splash, and which teams go into full sell mode?

The final day of the regular season is on Sunday, Sept. 27, with the playoffs starting just two days later. Most divisions are still up for grabs with no clear leader, so the second half is sure to provide some chaos. Only time will tell which teams will rise and which will fall.
