Stepping Away: Big N Little Shoes Closes After 60 Years Serving Mount Greenwood

Posted on April 10, 2026

After more than six decades of serving families on Chicago’s Southwest Side, Big N Little Shoes (3142 W. 111th St.) is preparing to close its doors—marking the end of an era for the Mount Greenwood community.

The beloved neighborhood shop, known for its personalized fittings and wide selection of specialty footwear, has long been more than just a shoe store.

For generations of customers, it was a place where care, patience, and expertise made all the difference, especially for those with medical needs or disabilities.

Families across the community relied on Big N Little Shoes for orthopedic and specialty footwear. Many customers recall bringing in children who needed extra support after surgeries or who required custom-made shoes to accommodate disabilities.

The store’s staff took the time to ensure each customer found not just a functional fit, but something that made them feel confident and comfortable.

That dedication left a lasting impression. In community reactions shared online, customers reflected on how the store helped shape their childhoods and supported their families during important moments.

Cook County Commissioner Sean Morrison shared his own memories of visiting the shop with family.

“Many times my grandmother and my mother would bring us kids there,” he said, recalling trips to the store along 111th Street. “Thanks for the memory.”

Others echoed similar sentiments, particularly highlighting the store’s role in helping children with mobility challenges.

One community member, William Gasparik, remembered bringing his son to the store decades ago. “Used to take my younger son for special shoes that would help him walk better… Sorry to see them go,” he said.

Stories like these illustrate the unique role Big N Little Shoes played as a trusted resource for families navigating medical needs. From first steps to post-surgery recoveries, the store became a quiet but important part of many life milestones.

Even customers without specialized needs found something special in the experience.

The store’s welcoming atmosphere and knowledgeable service made shoe shopping feel personal in a way that larger chain stores often cannot replicate. Parents recall children being excited to try on different options, while staff members offered thoughtful recommendations tailored to each individual.

As the retail landscape continues to shift, small, family-run businesses like Big N Little Shoes have become increasingly rare. Its closure reflects broader changes in how people shop but also highlights the loss of community-centered spaces that prioritize relationships over transactions.

For Mount Greenwood residents, the closing is not just about losing a store. It’s about saying goodbye to a place woven into the fabric of the neighborhood.

Whether it was a child’s first properly fitted pair of shoes or a custom solution that improved someone’s quality of life, Big N Little Shoes leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond its shelves.

As the store prepares to close, many are taking a moment to reflect on the memories made there and to thank the people behind the counter who made those moments possible.
