Saint Xavier regrouping after the end of a play. SXU Athletics
The Saint Xavier University (SXU) Cougars men’s volleyball team fell to the seventh-ranked Mount Mercy Mustangs in a tightly contested five-set match, resulting in just their third loss of the season, and one of the most competitive outings of the year.
The Cougars’ only defeats prior came early in the year against No. 1: The Master’s University and Concordia University Irvine. Since then, SXU had surged into form, compiling a fourteen-game winning streak that included six ranked victories and six wins in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play.
That stretch reinforced their dominance both nationally and within the conference competition. Throughout that run, SXU displayed a high level of efficiency and control, winning 42 sets while dropping just 2 over that span.
Even looking at their least efficient performance across the winning streak, the Cougars still posted a .241 hitting percentage against No. 15, William Penn University (Iowa), further underscoring their consistency as a unit.
That momentum, however, was halted by Mount Mercy.
The Mustangs posted a .355 hitting percentage with 15 errors on 124 attempts, narrowly surpassing Saint Xavier’s .323 mark with 22 errors on 155 attempts. Mount Mercy set the tone early, edging out a 25–23 win in the opening set.
Saint Xavier rallied and secured back-to-back sets, including a dominant third set in which they recorded an absurd .577 hitting percentage – allowing the Cougars to briefly dictate the game. Yet, SXU’s efficiency dipped late, falling to .256 in the fourth set and .182 in the fifth and final set.
Meanwhile, the Mustangs surged when it mattered most, hitting .444 and .462 in the final two sets to secure the upset over the No. 2 Cougars.
Setter Cameron Daniels led SXU with a career-high 61 assists. He was supported by Right-side hitter, Matt Pennala, and Outside hitter, Caydann Cox, who tallied 26 and 16 kills, respectively. As a team, the Cougars set a new single-match program record with 72 kills, surpassing the previous mark of 69, which was set during the 2025 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Men’s Volleyball National Championship Tournament.
Despite the historic offensive performance from Daneils and the Cougars, Mount Mercy emerged victorious. The victory improved the Mustangs to 14 wins on the season, cementing their place in the NAIA top 10.
Saint Xavier, meanwhile, remains well-positioned nationally and has already turned their focus toward the final stretch of the regular season.
The Cougars responded with a perfect showing at the Viterbo Tri-Match, sweeping Viterbo University (Wis.), Clarke University, and Trinity Christian College (Ill.) in a dominating fashion.
This quick response from SXU is consistent with their resilient nature. Over the past two seasons, the Cougars have yet to drop back-to-back matches, with a reputable standard they’ve obtained as a battle tested program in the NAIA.
With eight matches remaining, Saint Xavier looks to close out strong on CCAC play ahead of the conference tournament and the NAIA National Tournament. The remaining schedule includes conference matchups against Judson University and Saint Ambrose University (Iowa), along with a ranked test against No. 12 Bethel University (Ind.), offering the opportunity for the Cougars to catch their stride entering postseason play.
