Flushable wipe being extracted from Morris plumbing The Xavierite
On Jan. 27, Isacc Torres, Director of University Housing, emailed all residential students at Saint Xavier University (SXU) about the plumbing issues in Morris Hall.
Throughout the email, Torres explained that the plumbing issues had been due to a list of sanitary products such as disinfectant wipes (Clorox or Lysol wipes), paper towels, Kleenex, flushable wipes, sanitary napkins, and tampons.
As a reminder to students, Torres explained that residents at SXU shouldn’t be flushing anything into the pumps unless it is a bathroom tissue.
Along with the email, students have expressed issues with the laundry room and showers in the bathrooms in Morris Hall.
In Morris Hall, residents are being told that they won’t be able to use their bathrooms for up to four days due to the showers leaking into the dorm below them. Some students have expressed concerns.
Sophia Robledo, a residential student in Morris, stated, “It is inconvenient for my health to always be asking my suitemates to use their restroom in their dorm.”
Additionally, there have been reports of issues with the washing machines. According to a few students the washers stopped in the middle of a load due to the overflow of water coming into the washer. This results in the washer running out of water and stopping the cycle with soaked clothes.
Jason Jimenez-Garrido, a Morris resident, stated, “Many times there is only one of the two washer and dryer machines in order, which is super inconvenient and less than ideal in a floor where probably more than 20 students reside.
Robledo continued by stating, “The washers are unpredictable when washing clothes because we never know when it is gonna break down or not”
As residents are submitting maintenance requests, it has been noted that it could take up to four days for a staff member in maintenance to get back to the student at hand.
“Sometimes it takes days for these machines to be fixed, which should not be the case, as we are paying a ridiculous amount of money to live at these dorms,” shared Jimenez-Garrido.
The plumbing problems in Morris have been an ongoing issue for the students who are currently residents of the dorm hall.
Jimenez-Garrido explained, “The plumbing issues have been a constant issue throughout my four years living on campus. It seems that there are always issues with the washers or dryers especially.” If a student has any further questions regarding plumbing in their dorm room, contact the RA of the dorm hall or fill out a maintenance request through Residence Life.
