The Student Activities Board (SAB) hosted Winter Welcome Week from Jan. 21 until Jan. 24.

Winter Welcome Week celebrated the beginning of the Spring ‘25 semester. Events include: Set the Invitation, Do You Want To Build a Snow Globe, and Snow Tubing Outing.

‘Set the Invitation’ took place on Wednesday, Jan. 22 where students had the opportunity to make vision boards and plan out their year. Events hosted by SAB were free of charge, and materials were provided.

On Thursday, Jan. 23, students were able to create custom snow globes at SAB’s, ‘Do You Want To Build a Snow Globe’ event. SAB additionally offered a Baked Potato Bar. Which included baked potatoes, melted cheese, bacon, sour cream, etc. The bar was self-serve and attendees were invited to have as many as they wanted.

The last event for Winter Welcome Week included a trip to Villa Olivia where students snow tubed for a couple hours. The attendees took a bus up to the location in Barrett, Illinois. Once at the event they were given tags and allowed to snow tube for 2 hours until the time slot ended.

There was an event planned for Tuesday, Jan 21, however due to the cold weather and campus being closed it didn’t happen.

SAB ‘ handed out the items throughout the other events of the week instead.  Some items given out were beanies and scarves with the SXU label on them.

“There are still some leftovers, so if any students who did not receive one are wanting one, we have them in the Student Organization Center (Also known as the SOC,) L109B. They just need to stop by and ask!” said Kennedy Adams, community engagement coordinator.

SAB began planning about a month before the events took place.

“We think about what times of year it is, the type of events that are well-received by the students, along with what aligns with the University’s core values, our budget, and that’s how we decide what we are going to do” Adams stated. “Being a University by the Sisters of Mercy, our goal is to create events where students feel like they learned a new skill, or did something or talked to someone new, which might have been outside their comfort zone, that’s how you grow!”

When planning an event planner must reach out to a vendor and ask for invoices and contacts, or if it’s a craft event like the snow globe event, the board members will create a list of supplies.

Adams states “Growing up in the Midwest snow tubing, sledding, any winter sport is familiar. I learned that night that many students hadn’t been snow tubing or even sledding. We are glad to be able to give students those kinds of experiences that they otherwise might not have been able to have if not for the University ”

Adams stated that there are forthcoming events for the Spring semester such as Valentines week and the Spring formal.
