Oasis’ Resurgence and the Gallagher Brothers’ Reconciliation

After a decade-and-a-half’s separation, the English rock band Oasis has officially gotten back together to embark on a world tour.

The band is most remembered for their phenomenal 1995 classic song “Wonderwall,” with “Champagne Supernova” also being a fan favorite and another song heavily associated with the band’s success.

The two lead vocalists of Oasis, brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher, will both be present on the tour, along with guitarists Paul “Bonehead” Arthurs and Gem Archer, as well as bassist Andy Bell. All men except for Arthurs, who left the band ten years before its official split, were members of the band at the time of its 2009 ending.

Drummer Chris Sharrock, a drummer who was only with the group for one year when the members swiftly went their separate ways, won’t be returning for the tour.

But what caused this successful indie group to split in such an abrupt manner? The story of a fateful day at a music festival in France is one that will shock anybody.

The group was set to perform at the Rock en Seine Festival in Paris in just a couple of moments on Aug. 28, 2009, before Liam and Noel Gallagher broke out into a nasty physical altercation that resulted in the latter deciding to leave the band for good.

The brothers didn’t speak for years following the incident. As recently as January of this year, in an interview with The Guardian, Liam Gallagher revealed that he hadn’t spoken to his older brother since the altercation.

Both brothers went on from there to form their own separate bands. Oasis became Beady Eye after Noel left, and the group went on to make two albums before Liam announced their split in Oct. 2014.

Noel Gallagher formed another band called Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, of which Archer and Sharrock from Oasis would join the band on tour. The band released music as recently as last year.

The Gallagher brothers were notorious for their quarreling . The brothers even physically fought onstage once at a show, with Liam hurling a tambourine at Noel’s head after the latter made a jab at his kid brother during one of the songs, causing Noel to throw in the towel with the band for the first of three times. The second occurrence would be in 2000 when Liam brought into question Noel’s paternity to his daughter, Anaïs.

Noel announced his departure from the band just hours after the altercation with his brother via the official Oasis website, asserting that he “simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer.”

Especially considering Liam’s statements in his Jan. 2024 interview with The Guardian, things were not looking up in terms of an Oasis reunion.

This image in fans’ heads that the brothers couldn’t hash out their differences began to dissipate on Aug. 26, when both Gallagher brothers, as well as the official Oasis X account, posted identical videos, featuring the messages “27.08.24” and “8 a.m.” inscribed in the famous Oasis logo font.

At the indicated time the next day, it was announced on X that the rumors were right: Oasis would be embarking on a reunion tour, entitled the “Oasis Live ‘25 Tour.”

The first show of the tour is scheduled for July. 4 of  next year at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.

A North American leg of the tour was announced on Sept. 30, and shortly thereafter, a couple shows in Australia were revealed to be a part of the tour as well.

I can imagine there is no better time than now to be a longtime Oasis fan. It is quite refreshing to see these two brothers reconcile with one another and go on tour with their former bandmates.
