SXU Steamrolls Past Madonna to Earn Their Second Win of the Season

Taking a hard loss in the previous game, the Cougars bounced back in the best way and got themselves a win in dominant fashion. Everyone was locked in and were adamant on getting this win to keep a positive record.

The Cougars took absolute control over this game as this was a wire-to-wire win, taking the lead and never looking back. They never once trailed in this game, showing the Madonna Crusaders that there is no mercy on the field.

The Cougars were relentless in their goal to win this game, cruising past the Crusaders with a final score of 55-13. SXU took the early 7-0 lead, and eventually found themselves up 31-3 at halftime. The rest is history as SXU secures their second win of the season.

Fifth-year senior quarterback Stuart Ross helped lead his team to victory as he completed 10 out of 14 (71%) of his passes for 182 yards. Ross also threw two touchdowns in this game.

Junior quarterback Dominic D’Ambrosio got some plays in and was very efficient on the field, completing 6 out of 7 (85%) of his passes for 128 yards. D’Ambrosio also threw a touchdown and recorded four carries for 18 yards.  

Many players had their fair share of getting the ball or scoring a touchdown, as a total of seven players scored at least one touchdown. Fifth-year senior wide receiver Kyle Quinn led the team with the most receptions hauling in four.

Graduate student wide receiver Julian Smith brought in two receptions for 59 yards, and also two kick returns for 109 yards. He finished the game with a grand total of 168 yards.

Junior running back Tyreese Lee led the team with the second most carries, recording a total of six for 49 yards. 

Senior running back Jessi Plunkett went on to lead the offense in carries as he recorded seven carries for 40 yards and scored a touchdown.

The defense played a crucial role in this blowout win as many players were able to get a lot of stops and make the right plays.

Junior linebacker Chris Swayne was SXU’s main defense leader in this game as he led the defense in tackles, recording 12 and six of those tackles being solo.

Freshman defensive back Zach Norred recorded the second most tackles with a total of nine tackles. Norred delivered on his end as he got eight solo tackles out of his nine total.

Junior linebacker Terry Elias Jr. also showed up big in this game as he recorded seven tackles with four of them being solo tackles. He also got a couple of pass breakups.

Redshirt freshman defensive linemen David Burton made his impact on the game as he recorded five tackles with three of them being solo. Burton also made a big play where he recorded a sack for 12 yards.

Graduate student linebacker Ryan Fitzgerald made himself a highlight reel out of this game by getting five tackles and all of them being solo tackles. He had 2.0 tackles for a loss for three yards, while also grabbing an interception.

Graduate student kicker Peyton Benes had a perfect game as he was 2-2 on field goal attempts and went 7-7 on extra point attempts.

Freshman kicker Ayden Sheppard performed well in this game as he recorded 10 kickoffs for 539 yards.

Everything was going the way it needed to for the Cougars, there was so much to celebrate from this game. Especially when redshirt freshman running back KJ Devine-Woods scored his first collegiate touchdown. 

Wins like these definitely boost the morale in the locker room and give these boys the confidence to go out on that field and win a game.

With such a dominant win, the Cougars can only hope to spark a winning streak from this.       

The Cougars are going to be back home this weekend as they will face off against Concordia University (Mich.). The game kicks off at 6:30 p.m, as the action will take place at Bruce R. Deaton Field.
