A Lucky Night for SXU

Formal Flier                                                                                                                              Students Activities Board

The Students Activities Board will be hosting a Spring Formal on Friday April 19 from 6-10 p.m. The formal will be located at Rancho Los Guzman in Joliet, Illinois. The theme for the formal is A Lucky Night.

The location was chosen to stay within budget. The theme “A Lucky Night” was chosen from the horses at the Rancho. “Often horseshoes are associated with luck, that is how we came up with the idea for the theme,” shares Kennedy Adams, Graduate Assistant for Campus Life.

University provided transportation is required. Check in will begin at 4:00 p.m. in the Butler Reception Room. Buses will depart from campus at 5 p.m., to arrive at the venue around 6 p.m. Everyone will return to campus between 10:30-11 p.m.

Tickets will be sold in the diner Mon.-Friday, they are also available to purchase online. Tickets for SXU students are $30 and tickets for non-SXU students are $55. Prices will increase $5 after April 1.

Prices are higher for non-SXU attendees due to these events being planned for SXU students. “When we open up events to the public, we have to adjust the price accordingly. We don;t want to use student fees for non-SXU students,” explains Adams.

The dress is black tie optional. Guests are requested to wear a suit, dress pants and a button up, a formal length gown, or a shorter cocktail dress. It is asked that guests not wear jeans, t-shirts, skirts, cargo shorts, or flip flops.

Food that will be provided is Greek chicken, rice, potatoes, chicken arbol, beans, salad, and a sweet treat. There will be soft drinks available and a cash bar for those who are 21+.

Students are required to take SXU transportation to the formal and back, unless otherwise approved in advance by the Dean of Students Office.

Spring Formal is an annual event planned by the Students Activities Board. “We do it every year. It’s a way to give students who might not have had a school-dance opportunity a chance to dress up, eat a nice meal, and dance the night away,” says Adams.

Currently 35 tickets have been sold. There are about 265 spots available.

Students have voiced not wanting to attend due to the prices being so high and not knowing where all proceeds are going to.

“It does not logically make sense for students, especially underclassmen, to wanna pay $30 for the spring formal. Every other free event that we have seen hasn’t had much traction or social reasons to attend. Hardly anyone goes,” voices student Layla Perkins.

According to Adams, Proceeds will go towards covering the remaining expenses of the Spring Formal.

Last year’s spring formal was held at the Drake Hotel in downtown themed “starry night”. Last year’s formal had 280 students + their guests attend.
