Album Review: “Since I Have A Lover” by 6lack

After a five-month hiatus, 6lack comes out of hiding as he released his album “Since I Have A Lover” last friday! His fans have been anticipating a new prefect for quite some time, but this was an album that could not have been predicted. As time has progressed, so has his style of music, and I think that his fans are in for a sweet treat as they press play on his new creation.

6lack has been a prospering artist and a game changer in both the rap and R&B industries. His debut album “FREE 6LACK” took his career to a new level with his popular hits “ PRBLMS” and “Ex Calling”  trending on social media. In 2018, he dropped his second album “East Atlanta Love Letter” that featured some amazing artists such as Future, J.Cole, Offset and Khalid. Songs like “Unfair” and “Pretty Little Fears” made this project stand out because of his different flows and transitions.

However, after this album was released, we did not receive another project from 6lack. He dropped an unexpected EP in 2020 titled “6pc Hot EP” that has some pretty chill songs, but to not drop again for another three years outside of features was shocking to witness. His features like the one he did for Femme It Forward’s single “What You Deserve” was a great vibe, but it is time for him to give us another gem. Today, the wait is now over as “Since I Have A Lover” is here!

Overall, this album is a 10/10 from front to back, giving us a diverse sense of sound that still matches who he is as an artist. He has a laid-back aura to this album that truly sets the tone for someone as subtle as he is. Having only two features is also really exciting, showing that he does not need multiple artists to create a banger. There are some specific songs that I would like to put you all onto; be sure to thank me later.

“cold feet” 10/10

I rated this song 10/10 because this was the perfect intro to his album. The song literally started off with a woman ranking his albums, and asking when she was going to get a new project from him. Then, he gave us an interlude type of feel as he started rapping over the pretty melodies in the background. Then, at the end, the woman comes back and says “I need some more music, because your music is awesome and your fans are starving” which was such an accurate statement, being a fan who was hungry to hear what he made!

“Testify”  8/10

I really enjoyed listening to this song. It has such an emotional statement with a relatable story about love. The guitar in the background was just the right instrument to back up this type of song, giving a call-and-response vibe to this song. This is a song to listen to on a cool walk while you free your thoughts.

“B4L” 9/10

This song is one of my personal favorites off of the album. This song highlights his R&B side, enlightening high vibrations and smooth sensations. Whenever you need a song to spice up your night with a special someone, play this jammy jam.

“Since I have A Love” 11/10

This song is so good, also one of my favorites. As soon as I heard this song, I instantly smiled and became filled with joy. This is the definition of a “feel-good” song, giving you a light vibe to carry throughout your day. I can see this song in a movie transition or a commercial.

“Since I Have A Lover” was so great and, I must admit, it was worth the wait. I loved how this album was not predictable nor was it basic. He gave a very creative, euphoric, 6lack-like album that only could be made by him specifically. Other than the late submission, I have no complaints. It’s so good to see him back in his element!
