Cougar Volleyball Plays Tough Over Spring Break

On Thursday, March 14, the Saint Xavier men’s volleyball team fell to Warner University in three sets. The sets ended with scores of 25-18, 25-17 and 25-20.

Justin Cousin, a junior outside hitter, once again led the team with eight kills. Freshman middle blocker Sam Kull added six kills to the offensive effort while sophomore setter Dan French racked up 20 assists throughout the match.

On the defensive side of the match, Cousin, senior right side Nick Piccirillo and junior middle blocker J.T. O’Connell each added four digs in an attempt to stop Warner University.
Over the weekend, the Cougars played two more matches. On Friday, March 15, Lourdes College swept the Cougars in three sets with scores of 25-21, 25-18 and 25-10.

On Saturday, March 16, SXU played a hard match against Siena Heights University, but they ultimately fell short in five matches with scores of 25-18, 25-20, 13-25, 18-25 and 9-15.
Cousin again led the team in attacks, finishing the weekend with 19. Kull was on fire over the weekend, adding 17 kills and five service aces between both matches. French posted 49 assists on the weekend along with six kills. Also, sophomore middle blocker Sean Blackwood played two strong matches, adding 14 kills to the Cougar’s effort.

After the weekend, the Cougars have a record of 3-9 in conference and 5-18 overall. The Cougars will look to improve on that record this Wednesday, March 20 when they take on Milwaukee School of Engineering at the Shannon Center at 7 p.m.
