Foreign Involvement in Ukraine

Posted on March 16, 2022

As Russia continues to wage war against Ukraine, the United States and other NATO(North Atlantic Treaty Organization) countries have provided financial and military aid to Ukraine.

As Putin appears to be trapped in a corner, as external resources are cut off, he has also asked China for support. It is unclear as to whether or not China will provide financial or militarial support.

The question remains though, is the U.S. doing enough to help Ukraine?

As Zelenski calls on NATO to instill a no-fly zone over Ukraine, fears of creating a larger conflict, creating a war between Russia and NATO countries continue to deter the idea.

While a no-fly zone may possibly prove to be beneficial for Ukraine, the effects would be detrimental to NATO countries.

If NATO were to implement a no-fly zone, it would entail direct conflict with Russia, as allied troops would be shooting down any Russian aircrafts violating the order.

After Putin’s threat to Western nations made on Feb. 23rd, 2022, of “consequences greater than any you have faced in history” the fear of nuclear weaponry arose, especially as Russia placed its nuclear weapons on high alert.

While a no-fly zone may sound beneficial in theory, the question remains of how Russia would respond? Would the potential threat of a nuclear war become a reality?

Instead, the United States should make it easier for Ukrainian refugees to seek asylum and legal permanent residence if they wish.

Being that Ukraine is not part of NATO, the United States should not send troops into Ukraine and instead continue to provide military equipment and financial aid.

However, in the instance that Russia were to attack a NATO country, such as Poland, then the United States should do everything they can to defend their allies.

Being that Russia has begun bombing Western Ukraine alongside the border of Poland, it’s possible that we’ll see this war escalate.
