‘Rogue One’ Prequel Series Looks Promising

In November of 2018, Disney and Lucasfilm announced that the character of Cassian Andor would be getting his own series on Disney+. Along with the announcement, it was also announced that Cassian Andor actor, Diego Luna, would be reprising his role as the character. Andor was previously seen in Star Wars’s first spin-off film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story where he ultimately met his fate. However it was revealed that this series would be a prequel to the spin-off film so the series would take place before his death. Last year, it was announced that Alan Tudyk, who lended the voice and body to a reprogrammed Imperial droid, K-2SO, would also be joining Luna in the series.

On Friday, April 24th, Lucasfilm gave a pretty major update to the upcoming series. The company announced that writer, Tony Gilroy, will serve as the showrunner for the series. For those unfamiliar with that name, Gilroy was brought onboard Rogue One: A Star Wars Story pretty late into production. He was basically the film’s “ghost director” as he was brought in by Lucasfilm to rewrite a lot of the film.

Tony Gilroy also oversaw a lot of the post production work and was even behind some fan-favorite scenes in the film. Scenes such as the Battle of Scarif sequence and the popular Vader scene at the end of the film. While almost two years ago Gilroy publicly said that he would never return to a Star Wars project because he was not a fan, it looks like the tables have turned. I think this is personally great news. A lot of Star Wars fans have appreciated and loved Rogue One: A Star Wars Story because of the final results Gilroy provided.

Along with the announcement of Tony Gilroy’s involvement, Genevieve O’Reilly is set to reprise her role as Mon Mothma. O’Reilly was first seen as the character of Mon Mothma in a scene that was ultimately cut out in Revenge of the Sith. Luckily for Genevieve she was finally able to play the character on screen for everyone to see in 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. During that time she even voiced the character in Star Wars Rebels. Stellan Skarsgard, Denise Gough, and Kyle Soller were also announced as cast members.

Not only did Lucasfilm announce the cast of this series, but they also gave a timeframe for it. The Cassian Andor series will take place five years before the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Star Wars fans might take notice that there is already another series that takes place five years before the spin-off film. That series happens to be Star Wars Rebels!

It isn’t crazy to think or believe that we might see some characters from Star Wars Rebels appear in the Cassian series. Audience members of ‘Rebels’ did get a chance to see some ‘Rogue One’ characters pop up in the series, so it’s most likely to happen. Although which characters might appear will remain uncertain for now. Fans and subscribers to Disney+ will have to keep waiting for a release date for the series as no release date was given in the press release from Lucasfilm.
