Athlete Profile: Defensive lineman Josh Wallick

Josh Wallick SXU Cougars

Homecoming 2017 came and went. Cougar Nation celebrated their friendships, good times, the beautiful weather, and so much more. They were especially celebrating the Cougar win against the Taylor University Trojans, 24-20. This game was neck and neck all the way until the end. It was the battle of the defensives. It was a competitive showing for the 2017 Cougar Homecoming game. This win over the Trojans bring up the Cougar’s record 4-1.

The Cougar’s “bye” week follows an exciting weekend at home. Their next game will be on October 14th at their home field. They will be facing off the Trinity International University Trojans. This “bye” week is the perfect excuse to work on some fundamentals and to mentally prepare for the rest of this season. Nothing is holding this Cougar team back. Before the Cougars can get back to the basics, I got the chance to sit down with another member of the football team: Josh Wallick.

Wallick is a senior defensive lineman from Fisher, Illinois majoring in Biology. He played football in Fisher High School. When I sat down with Wallick, we talked about how he started to play football, and how it became a part of his life. I also asked him some questions you might not have known about this Cougar lineman. Let’s see what this Cougar has to say!

When did you start playing football and why?
Josh: I started playing football in first grade. The physical nature of football really drew me to play

Growing up, who was your role model?
Josh: Growing up my role model was my dad. He was a wrestler in college and was the toughest person I ever knew.

Did you always know you wanted to be a football player?
Josh: Yes, I loved playing the game even before I started.

Why did you come to Saint Xavier University?
Josh: I came to Saint Xavier because coming here I could continue to play football and receive a strong education.

What was your favorite thing to do as a kid?
Josh: My favorite thing to do as a kid was to hang out with my friends at the park. Every summer we would meet up at the pool and swim, play baseball, and play basketball.

What are the top 5 songs you listen to before a game or before you work-out?
Josh: 1)Stronger -Kanye, 2)Lose Yourself -Eminem, 3)Till I Collapse -Eminem, 4)Monster -Skillet, and 5)Heart of a Champion -Nelly. These songs put me in a focused mindset to win. This is part of playlist I listened to when I won two high school wrestling state championships.

Do you have any superstitions?
Josh: I don’t touch crutches in season unless I need them. A college athlete told me this when I was a kid and it stuck with me.
What will you miss about SXU after you graduate?
Josh: I will miss the relationships with many people I’ve made over my four years here

What do you want to do after you graduate?
Josh: I want to pursue an MBA program with a specialization in Health Administration and Fraud.

What do you like to do for fun?
Josh: Dominate Anthony Kowalczyk in ping pong and pool.

Left Twix or Right Twix?
Josh: Definitely Left Twix. The flowing caramel versus cascading caramel makes a world of difference.

Thanks for taking the time to sit down with me Josh! It was a real pleasure! Good luck to Josh and the rest of the Cougars on the second half of your season. Cougar Nation is cheering you guys on the way to victory! Go Cougs!
