Star Wars Celebration 2017 Recap

This year’s Star Wars Celebration just wrapped up and fans of the series received exciting news over the weekend. For those who don’t know what Star Wars Celebration is, it is a fan gathering that celebrates the beloved sci-fi franchise. This year, the celebration took place in Orlando, Florida and it lasted four days. Here are some of the highlights:

Star Wars: Battlefront II

In 2015, video game developers EA and DICE released Star Wars: Battlefront. After receiving criticism from fans and critics alike, EA hopes to make amends with the upcoming sequel.

The first game lacked a story mode and only focused on online player-to-player combat or multiplayer. This time, EA included a story mode but with a twist. The narrative for Battlefront II will focus on the downfall of the Empire up to the rise of the First Order from the perspective of an Imperial soldier named Iden. This will be a welcome addition since this is such a unique spin for any Star Wars game but, more importantly, the game will bridge the gap from Return of the Jedi to The Force Awakens.

Another exciting addition to Battlefront II is the inclusion of every era of Star Wars. In the first game, players could only play around with characters, vehicles, weapons and planets from the original Star Wars trilogy. In the sequel, players can play from the Clone Wars, the prequels era, the original trilogy and the new trilogy. This means new maps, vehicles and characters, such as Darth Maul, Yoda and Rey.

Star Wars Rebels

Star Wars Rebels is an animated television show that airs only on Disney XD. The show follows a young man named Ezra (Taylor Gray) and his friends as they fight against the Empire after the events of the third episode, Revenge of the Sith. The show just wrapped up its third season in March and the fourth and final season was announced over the weekend. While this news was totally unexpected, fans were reassured that the end of Rebels would not mean the end of Star Wars animation. In fact, another animated project called Forces of Destiny was announced for the fall.

Episode VIII: The Last Jedi

Now it’s time for the news everyone has been waiting for: The eighth film in the Star Wars saga, The Last Jedi. A trailer was released over the weekend and it gave fans a glimpse of what is to come. Before the trailer was shown, director Rian Johnson and a couple of cast members discussed the upcoming film.

Daisy Ridley, the star of the upcoming film, stated that The Last Jedi will give more insight into Rey’s story. Ever since the release of The Force Awakens, fans have been speculating about Rey’s identity and her past. Also, Rey will be receiving Jedi training from none other than Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) himself. The Last Jedi will also delve into what happened with Luke and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) before the events of The Force Awakens.

Director Rian Johnson also said series newcomer Kelly Marie Tran will be the newest addition to the film. She is a maintenance worker for the Resistance and somehow gets dragged into Finn’s (John Boyega) adventure.

It was also stated that Billy Dee Williams will not be returning to reprise his role as Lando Calrissian for this film. Also, the late Carrie Fisher will not appear in Episode IX, as announced by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be in theaters December 15, 2017.
