Ken’s Sports Recap 4/10

Softball

After the busy schedule the softball team had last week, I’m sure they were delighted to be a part of two double-headers over the course of the weekend. Seeing as how their game on Wednesday was rained out, will their extra rest give them a competitive edge, or will this it be marked by unpreparedness and loss.

Sat, April 8 V.S. Saint Ambrose University

It was a special day for the Cougars. Not only were they facing up against conference rival in St. Ambrose, but they were also commemorating the hard work put in by their seniors on Senior day. The first game unfortunately, showed no love for the seniors as SXU struggled, losing the game 6 runs to 1. Determined not to end their senior day with a loss, the seniors came alive in the second game. Senior catcher Brittany Palmer led the Cougars to a decisive 13 to 7 run with. Palmer racked up 3 homers that capped off a huge game deciding run for the Cougars.

Among Palmer, seniors Callie Brown, Savannah Kinsella, and Franchesca Graffeo were all honored on senior day. Congratulations to them, and congratulations to the Cougars for a much-needed win to add to a great season.

Sun, April 9 V.S. Purdue University

This marked the second double-header of the week for the Cougars that saw them drop both games to Purdue University. The first set saw SXU lose 7 runs to 3, followed by a 2 runs to 1 defeat. What’s interesting to note, is SXU obtained more hits then Purdue (14 hits to Purdue’s 12), but SXU was unable to do what matters most and that’s turn those hits into runs. With these two losses, SXU drops to a record of 15 wins and 17 losses for the season.

The Softball team looks to return to action this coming Tuesday as they host conference rival Judson University in what is sure to be an exciting game. Come out and enjoy, if not keep it locked here at the Xavierite for a recap of that game and many others.

Men’s Volleyball

We may be excited at the sight of sunshine and flowers, but the Men’s volleyball is seeing darkness and rainclouds. I say this, because their season came to end this past Friday. The team faced up against Robert Morris University in a conference semi-finals matchup. The Cougars dropped the game 3 sets to 0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-22 respectively). Despite the tough loss, the Cougars have to be happy for senior Sean Barry who not only had an incredible season leading the Cougars, but finished out his season and his career as part of All-CCAC Second Team. Congrats to Barry and congrats to the Cougars on an incredible season.

Golf

Both the Men and Women’s golf team competed in the two-day Spring Broadmoor Invitational held in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Men

The Men’s team were unable to place in the tournament, despite this the team should be proud of the performance of senior Bobby Lively. Lively had the best score for the Cougars as he placed 18th with a total score of 152 (74 in day 1; 78 day 20).

Women

The women’s team enjoyed a bit more success than the men as they not only placed, but they placed 4th out of the 8 total teams. Senior Taylor Thompson led the Cougars with a 3rd place individual finish scoring a total of 156 (78 for day 1 and 78 for day 2).

Both teams resume competition this upcoming Friday as they compete in the Bethel College Pilot Invitational. For a recap of that event and many others keep it locked here at the Xavierite.
