Dear Lauren,
It is only a couple of weeks into the semester and I already am falling behind in my classes. What should I do?
Sincerely,
Off to a Slow Start
Dear Slow Start,
The beginning of the semester can be a tough time. We are just getting off of break and most of us still wish that we were on break.
If you’re already falling behind, it can feel like all hope is lost and the semester will just be all downhill from here.
But you can’t start thinking like that! Instead, you need to get yourself back on track before things get worse.
The first thing you need to do is get yourself into a positive mindset. If you sit around and feel sorry for yourself, you’re just going to make things harder on yourself. Just keep telling yourself that you can do it.
Next, put your social life and other activities on hold for a little bit. I know that you would rather hang out with friends and take your mind off the stress, but if you keep avoiding the situation, you’ll keep falling more behind.
Take a couple of nights to bury your nose in your books and work ahead as much as you can for your classes. Also, put your phone and social media away. These are huge factors that affect your productivity.
Time management is going to be key for you during this time. Once you get your new class and work schedule down, cut out a time slot that you will dedicate to doing homework.
Don’t stress yourself out too much and step away from your work for SHORT breaks. (That means about 20 minutes, not 3 hours.)
Good luck and remember to listen to Lauren!
