Disney is celebrating a bunch of projects that are turning a decade old this year. Among these include “Monsters University”, “Frozen”, and even “Planes”.
Monsters University, however, was the only prequel to a previous project. It was the prequel to the animated film “Monsters, Inc.”which came out in 2001, twenty-two years ago.
Throughout “Monsters, Inc.” the audience witnesses the friendship of Mike and Sully take many turns to try and save a child named Boo from being hurt. Many people just see this as a story of two monsters saving a child but it is much deeper.
At the beginning of the film, a child is let by accident into the monster’s world through her bedroom door which changes the monster’s perspective.
This film teaches many that it is okay to not know what is behind the door in life. It is okay to be scared of what the future may hold, but you have to continue fighting for who you would like to be.
Years later in 2013, an unexpected prequel titled “Monsters University” was released. The film told the story of how Mike and Sully became friends. It gives a new perspective of the dynamic duo but as a younger version.
As the story develops, the audience sees the two attend the titular Monster’s University. Mike, who was extremely fanboy-ish, loved the school. Meanwhile, Sully wanted to only be friends with the monsters that were portrayed as fraternity members and known as “cool”.
The two bumped heads and became enemies on their first day of university. On top of this relationship issue, they were faced with many downfalls and were threatened to be removed from school.
In the ultimate conclusion the pair had to team up in the games which was a group of monsters fighting another to prove that they are scarier than others. Although it was just a game for a trophy as the price, for Mike and Sully it became a game with the price of staying at the university.
It was through this that they learned the people who they found strange ended up as their friends.
Throughout Mike and Sully’s story in “Monster’s University”, the audience is taught that no matter who two individuals are in the world, they have the ability to be friends no matter what their social status is.
Monsters University is well known on many more campuses than just Saint Xavier University because this film is something that current college students grew up with.
This film also teaches college students that it is okay to be social with people that you may not know. While this film is taking place, Mike and Sully are coming into freshman year while they are experiencing the conflict.
Their struggles to find friends that may not look like them or have the same social status as them helps incoming freshmen.
In celebration of “Monster’s University” and many more projects becoming ten years old this year, Disney has rereleased DVD and Blu-ray of the movies with new art shown on the box.
