Freelance Whales: “Diluvia” Hits the Right Notes

Freelance-Whales2Freelance Whales started their career by performing on the streets and subways of New York City in 2008.  The members include; Chuck Criss, Doris Cellar, Judah Dadrone, Jacob Hyman and Kevin Read. Freelance Whales is a part of French Kiss Records and have performed worldwide. On October 9th, 2012 Diluvia, the second album by Freelance Whales was released. Diluvia provides a unique spin to the analogous sound of Indie music. Diluvia by Freelance Whales can be described as quaint and attention grabbing. This album makes you feel like you’re at home but on a planet far away from Earth.

Freelance Whales uses a unique combination of instruments which include: the banjo, harmonium, glockenspiel, drums, mandolin and electric guitar. Another great thing about Diluvia is that all the members of Freelance Whales can sing marvelously and when their voices are layered together you are unable to control the hairs on your arms from standing up.  Unique Indie music is hard to come by, some bands tend to play different variations of the same song. Freelance Whales is an expectation to the typical Indie sound.

Although the entire album is spectacular my favorite tracks of Diluvia include; Follow Through, Spitting Image, Locked Out and DNA Bank. Since the first time I heard Diluvia, they have been on repeat in my head, iPod and radio show. I’m kicking myself for missing their performance in Chicago on January 19th at Lincoln Hall; one can only hope they will tour again soon.  According to their Facebook account, Freelance Whales is currently working on writing more music which I couldn’t be any more excited about.

Below is their official video for “Spitting Image” from Diluvia. Such a peculiar video for an awesome song…  A+
