Discover the Joy of “Twenty One Pilots”

Lately I have been into this really sweet band named Twenty One Pilots. I just recently heard about them so my apologies if I am a little behind, hipsters.  I first heard their song “Holding On To You” on Q87.7 and was a bit confused, because at first I thought it was MC Chris making a song with some indie rock kids. However, I was clearly wrong. Thanks to Shazam, I found out the name of the band and that is when the love affair began. If you have never heard of Twenty One Pilots, then I highly recommend that you check them out.

Twenty One Pilots is a duo made up of Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun from Columbus, OH.  According to their Facebook, they have filed their genre under “Schizoid Pop”. Since I had no idea what this meant, I looked it up and from what I have gathered, it means that the sound has many influences. And that is no joke with their album, Vessel. This album is so eclectic and all over the place and it works.

Joseph and Dun are some good looking creative dudes.

Many of the songs include rapping on top of music that you would hear coming from a band such as Fun. or some other indie pop band. They have two albums, however their latest album, Vessel, is the one that I really love. Fueled By Ramen released Vessel on January 8th. This is the same label that brought us other bands such as, Paramore, Gym Class Heroes, and many more.

There are so many different sounds and influences on this album that it is hard to describe it with words. The only way to get a full grasp on the album is to actually listen to it. Some of the top songs to check out are “The Run and Go”, “Holding On To You”, “Ode To Sleep”, and “House of Gold”. Each of these songs has their own sound and are not like each other at all.

While “House of Gold” is light and poppy, “Ode To Sleep” has a darker feel to it. Think Eminem and My Chemical Romance had a love child and called it “Ode To Sleep” to get an idea of what you are getting. According to the grand Internet, these guys put on an excellent live show, too. They keep it upbeat and fun. Unfortunately, they will not be coming to Chicago anytime soon. However, if you are up for a road trip, they will playing in Lansing, MI on February 12th! Definitely be sure to check these guys out, you will not regret it.
